Former Australian captain Mark Taylor says selectors now face a big headache at the selection table following a disastrous match for Australia A's openers in their tour match against India.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Aussies on Tuesday were dealt a cruel blow when Will Pucovski was struck on the helmet in a sickening knock.<\/p>\n

The 22-year-old, who has a history of concussion<\/a>, sunk to his knees after being hit while attempting to hook a Kartik Tyagi short ball delivery. He will remain with the squad but has been ruled out of Australia A's next tour match with India.<\/p>\n

While the news for another potential opener, Joe Burns, also wasn't too pleasing with the batsman bowled in the first over for a duck in Australia A's second innings pursuit of 131 for victory.<\/p>\n

Taylor said yesterday's performance "was about as bad as it could have been for the openers" with selectors already facing a headache with star opening batsman David Warner no certainty to play the first in the opening Test at Adelaide Oval, as he recovers from a groin injury.<\/p>\n

"Burns misses out in both innings, Pucovski misses out in the first innings and then gets conked in the second," he told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"That's about as bad a result as Australia could have got from an opening point of view. Now they've got potentially two openers, if Warner doesn't play, both lacking a bit of confidence so that's not a great position for them to be in."<\/p>\n

"Where they go, I'm not sure. Marcus Harris made a few in the first innings and he'll come into contention if both Warner and Pucovski can't play.<\/p>\n

"The other thing they could do is move someone like (Marnus) Labuschagne up and potentially play (Cameron) Green in the middle order."<\/p>\n

Taylor admitted that even if Pucovski and Warner are both ruled out for next week's opening Test, Burns would be no certainty to open the batting.<\/p>\n

In his last seven first-class matches this season, Burns has averaged just of 8.71 with the bat.<\/p>\n

"I don't think he is a lock (even if Warner and Pucovski don't play)," Taylor added.<\/p>\n

"Prior to all these injuries, if everyone was fit I would have been looking to play Warner and Pucovski to open the batting.<\/p>\n

"Unfortunately, Joe hasn't done anything in recent games to show that he is in any sort of form.<\/p>\n

"He's nicked one in the first and was bowled in the second and he's got 61 runs in his last seven innings so he's not in great form and that's a concern."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
