Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire<\/a> says his controversial move to shift Adam Doueihi from five-eighth to centre<\/a> is intended to spark his misfiring side back to life.<\/p>\n

The Tigers are languishing in 15th spot on the ladder, having lost five of their last six matches.<\/p>\n

But the form of Doueihi at five-eighth was one of the few bright spots in a so-far miserable season for the club, leaving many scratching their heads when he was named at centre for tonight's Magic Round match against Newcastle in Brisbane.<\/p>\n

The Tigers have conceded 262 points in nine matches to date in 2021, only the last-placed Bulldogs have a worse points differential.<\/p>\n

Despite that woeful record, Maguire says defensive problems are behind Doueihi's move.<\/p>\n

"No, just looking for a little bit of change in what we are doing," Maguire explained.<\/p>\n

"Obviously, the results are not what we are after, so we are looking for little bits of change to stimulate us as a team.<\/p>\n

"He (Doueihi) has been very strong for us, and that passion that he shows and how he plays, he is going to be a real strong player for us all the time."<\/p>\n

Maguire added that he had little doubt Doueihi would adapt quickly to the centres.<\/p>\n

"It is obviously a bit of a change for him, but wherever you get selected to play, you go out there to play your best, and that is one thing that Adam does," he said.<\/p>\n

"He has been excellent and I'm looking forward to seeing him being excellent in the centres.<\/p>\n

"He is a strong ball runner, so we'll see how that all plays out, but he has been excellent."<\/p>\n

Premiership winning coach Phil Gould has backed Maguire's reshuffle<\/a>, noting on his Six Tackles with Gus<\/em><\/a> podcast that something had to be done to reverse the club's fortunes.<\/p>\n

"Now I know Adam Doueihi is going particularly well, and I know he and (fullback) Daine Laurie are doing great, but they're not winning many and they're getting behind a lot," Gould said.<\/p>\n

"The coach has got to make some change-ups to get a better chemistry or a better defensive effort.<\/p>\n

"They scored 28 (points) and still got beaten (by the Titans on Saturday), so they've got to find a way to defend better."<\/p>\n
