Conor McGregor<\/a> was the world's top-earning athlete in the past 12 months, Forbes has revealed in its annual sports rich list.<\/p>\n

The UFC megastar made $US180 million ($233m), Forbes reported, with most of his earnings coming outside the octagon.<\/p>\n

McGregor made just $28.5 million from fighting, a lost UFC bout against Dustin Poirier, with the remainder coming mostly through the sale of his majority stake in Proper Twelve, his Irish whiskey brand. McGregor made $194 million from that business transaction.<\/p>\n

McGregor has long coveted the title of world's top-earning athlete, having previously had a best result of No.4 in the Forbes list; in 2018, after fighting Floyd Mayweather.<\/p>\n

The MMA fighter topped football superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, in second and third places with earnings of $168 million and $155 million respectively. Five years ago, McGregor told Ronaldo to his face that he would one day surpass him at No.1.<\/p>\n

Dallas Cowboys NFL star Dak Prescott was fourth, making $139 million, followed in fifth by NBA icon LeBron James with $125 million.<\/p>\n

Brazilian football idol Neymar made $123 million, placing sixth, ahead of tennis hero Roger Federer in seventh with $116.5 million. Federer was No.1 on the list last year, making nearly $160 million, yet he barely played in 2020 due to injury and the pandemic.<\/p>\n

F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton ($106m), NFL great Tom Brady ($98m) and NBA superstar Kevin Durant ($97m) rounded out the top 10.<\/p>\n
