Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd<\/a> has urged the club to "play hardball" when it comes to contract negotiations with star forward Jake Stringer<\/a> this year.<\/p>\n

Stringer is on the last year of a four-year deal signed back in 2017 and is "yet to have meaningful contract talks" with the club, according to The Age<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old is believed to currently be on a deal of around $500,000 annually, and Essendon football boss Josh Mahoney has admitted that the club wants to retain the electric forward.<\/p>\n

However, Lloyd urged the club to not break the bank for a player who is brilliant at his best, but remains inconsistent. <\/p>\n

\"Jake<\/p>\n

"I think Jake is somewhere in the ($500,000 range)," he told Nine's Footy Classified<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I would say to Jake, 'Okay, if you feel like you can get more elsewhere, go and test the market and good luck to you if there's another club there willing to pay more'. <\/p>\n

"I'd play hardball with Jake Stringer to be honest. He's a good player, when he's up and about he's a fantastic player, but he doesn't do it consistently enough."<\/p>\n

After enduring off-field trouble in the early part of his career, Stringer has matured into a model citizen since arriving at Tullamarine in the 2017 trade period. <\/p>\n

Stringer himself has spoken candidly about how his life has changed<\/a> since arriving at Essendon, and ex-Collingwood president Eddie McGuire urged him to continue his relationship with the club, even if it meant sacrificing some money down the road.<\/p>\n

"I think for Jake Stringer, and for the rest of Jake's life, I'd be advising him to stay an Essendon player," he told Footy Classified<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"Become a part of a great club that you can go back to for the next 50 years of your life and get a standing ovation every time you walk in the place."<\/p>\n

Stringer has kicked 12 goals in six games for Essendon so far in 2021, but is set to miss the next month of football due to a hamstring injury he sustained in Round Eight.<\/p>\n
