Essendon football boss Josh Mahoney says there was no ill-feeling from the club towards Zach Merrett<\/a> after a candid interview where he admitted was yet to decide where to play in 2022 and beyond.<\/p>\n

Merrett looms as the No.1 free agent target for rival clubs in the summer of 2021 and is expected to command a yearly salary in excess of $800,000 from either Essendon or another team he chooses to play for.<\/p>\n

In a candid interview with the Herald Sun, Merrett said he'd "like to see another few months" of consistent footy from his team in order for him to re-commit long term.<\/p>\n

According to Mahoney, the honesty from the 25-year-old was appreciated by the club.<\/p>\n

\"Zach<\/p>\n

"We've had some really good chats with Zach," Mahoney told SEN Breakfast.<\/p>\n

"As a club we've presented to him what our plans are moving forward, but really, the best feedback is that every day Zach comes in here, he's having a real impact on our group.<\/p>\n

"We feel really comfortable with what he's doing at the moment and he's got every right to do what he's doing.<\/p>\n

"I'm sure if Zach believes he's getting better every day, that contract will take care of itself.<\/p>\n

"Everyone appreciated the honesty from the article and that's what you get from every conversation you have with Zach, he just tells you up front what he's looking for, what he wants in a club, how he's feeling."<\/p>\n

While admitting that there was a temptation to consistently check in on Merrett, Mahoney suggested that the club would let its culture do the talking.<\/p>\n

"What we've done as a club, we've been very clear in that we'll just present to (Merrett) once and then apart from that you'll just come in every day and you'll just experience what you experience," he said.<\/p>\n

"I think you can get caught up sometimes trying to go out of your way to impress someone and do things, and that's not what Zach wants and that's not the way we want to go about it as a club."<\/p>\n
