Bulldogs CEO Aaron Warburton has confirmed the club is providing welfare to young playmaker Kyle Flanagan, after he broke down during an emotional press conference.<\/a><\/p>\n

Flanagan on the weekend was benched mid-game by coach Trent Barrett<\/a> while his side was trailing 6-0 during an encounter with the Eels, a clash which Canterbury ultimately lost.<\/p>\n

The 22-year-old, who had started all of Canterbury's games this season at halfback, was officially axed and left out the team for their Magic Round clash with the Raiders this Saturday.<\/p>\n

The team announcement led to Flanagan breaking down in front of reporters yesterday when he was asked about the importance of his dad, former Sharks coach Shane Flanagan, during tough times in the game.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs CEO confirmed to Nine's rugby league reporter Danny Weidler that the club had already been "doubling down" on player welfare in the wake of the halfback's axing from the side.<\/p>\n

"When anyone is in a compromising position like that you're always going to be concerned," Warburton told Nine News.<\/p>\n

"I just know this club, more so than a number of our competitors, are doubling down in that space. Welfare is of the utmost importance."<\/p>\n

Warburton revealed Flanagan spoke with club welfare officers following his emotional press conference.<\/p>\n

"Following yesterday's press conference, Kyle hung around for a couple of hours," he added.<\/p>\n

"We've got some professionals in that space, both inside the business and outside, that are talking to Kyle.<\/p>\n

"We have three people in our welfare department and two outsourced counsellors.<\/p>\n

Warburton said he was adamant the axing wouldn't impact Flanagan's confidence, who has the support of the club.<\/p>\n

"I don't think it will [damage his confidence]," he said.<\/p>\n

"I think Kyle is the kind of guy who is very resilient.<\/p>\n

"If you're a 22-year-old playing No.7 at an NRL club, you're a strong character and Kyle is exactly that.<\/p>\n

"He has all of our support."<\/p>\n
