Essendon great Matthew Lloyd says Carlton would be "crazy" to pay co-captain Patrick Cripps<\/a> over $750,000 on his next deal, suggesting the club should prioritise retaining Sam Walsh and leading goal-kicker Harry McKay.<\/p>\n

While Walsh and McKay have been two of the shining lights in Carlton's start to the season, the still-unsigned Cripps has been woefully out of form through the first eight games.<\/p>\n

McKay, who has kicked 30 goals in eight matches this season, is out of contract at the end of the season and is expected to command a salary of close to $1 million annually from rival suitors. <\/p>\n

Lloyd suggested that Carlton should prioritise Walsh's signing on a five-year, $750,000 per annum deal even though he is not out of contract until the end of 2022, before re-signing McKay on a five-year, $800,000 per year deal. <\/p>\n

While Cripps is a two-time All-Australian, Lloyd doesn't believe Carlton should offer the 26-year-old a deal any longer than four years at $750,000 per year.<\/p>\n

"Patrick Cripps, I know he was probably on $800,000 plus, but times have changed in terms of COVID and also salary cap and I don't think he would be entitled to that money," he told Nine's Footy Classified<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"If he can get it somewhere else, good luck to him, but I would not be paying over $750,000 for him. They would be crazy to pay more than that."<\/p>\n

Lloyd's point was echoed by Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes, who said the conversation around Cripps' ailing form had become a "distraction" at Carlton.<\/p>\n

"You've got to be prepared to lose him," he said.<\/p>\n

"This isn't a new thing for Patrick Cripps, he's horribly out of form and he has been for 18 months. <\/p>\n

"He finished ninth in Carlton's best and fairest last year in a team that didn't make the finals and he's not influencing games. This is now a distraction at Carlton his form."<\/p>\n

Complicating things for Carlton is the poor form of star recruit Zac Williams<\/a>, who is also understood to be commanding a salary of around $800,000 per year. <\/p>\n

The acquisitions of Williams and Adam Saad have left Carlton virtually capped out, with The Age's Sam McClure suggesting the club is paying 105 per cent of the cap this season.<\/p>\n

Both Lloyd and Cornes suggested Williams' hefty price tag would drive up what the likes of Walsh, McKay and Cripps would ask for, with Cornes calling the recruitment of the ex-GWS Giants star a list management failure.<\/p>\n

"They got him to play midfield, to help Patrick Cripps," he said.<\/p>\n

"The centre bounce clearance was 23-7 on the weekend, that was where the game was lost. <\/p>\n

"Williams was supposed to come in and help in the midfield. You have to question the list management as well. <\/p>\n

"You go after a midfielder on $800,000 a year to help Patrick Cripps, one who by his own admission is still learning how to play midfield. <\/p>\n

"It's extraordinary, they had to get a midfielder. He's still learning the role on $800,000?, that's Dangerfield money. That's a poor list management choice that Carlton made."<\/p>\n
