Port Adelaide were being "smart alecs" by donning the controversial prison bars guernsey<\/a> after Saturday night's Showdown win, Tony Jones says.<\/p>\n

'TJ' had a spirited clash with Power legend Kane Cornes while hosting The Sunday Footy Show,<\/em> over Port players wearing the guernsey after beating Adelaide; a defiant response to a ban enforced by Collingwood and the AFL. The jersey was allowed to be worn for a 2020 Showdown match, marking Port's 150th anniversary, but has since been sidelined.<\/p>\n

Power captain Tom Jonas responded to Jones' criticism of Saturday's provocative move.<\/p>\n

"I think it was only a small statement for the significance of what the jumper means to our club and our people," Jonas said on The Sunday Footy Show<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"We wanted to, as players, show them how important it is to us too. Disappointing not to be able to wear it during the game and I thought that was quite fitting."<\/p>\n

Jonas said that players had floated the idea mid-week and Port's GM of football, Chris Davies, had surprised the team with the guernseys on game day.<\/p>\n

Jones said that he'd disagreed with ex-Collingwood boss Eddie McGuire's opposition to Port wearing the prison bars, saying that the guernsey should have been allowed in the Showdown. Yet he wasn't a fan of the guernsey's cheeky appearance post-match.<\/p>\n

"This here, to me, just smacks of a club being an absolute pack of smart alecs," Jones said, firing up Cornes, who replied: "Why?"<\/p>\n

"Well why do that?" Jones countered. "That's just being demonstrative. That's an up-yours Collingwood and an up-yours AFL."<\/p>\n

Cornes:<\/strong> "They're in their own change room."<\/p>\n

Jones:<\/strong> "You like that, do you?"<\/p>\n

Cornes:<\/strong> "I don't mind it, TJ, if it's that important to them. What I would say is, now it's time to move on for Port Adelaide. They play Western Bulldogs this week, it's now time to put that behind you and wear the jumper you're going to wear and move on."<\/p>\n

Jones:<\/strong> "I think even Port Adelaide people were a bit embarrassed by that."<\/p>\n

Cornes:<\/strong> "No they're not, look on social media. They loved it. The Port Adelaide people loved it. It's the Dane Swans, it's the Tony Joneses in the world that didn't."<\/p>\n

Jones:<\/strong> "So that's the barometer of what we should be thinking, is it?"<\/p>\n

Cornes:<\/strong> "They only care about their fans, they don't care what you think about it or what Eddie thinks about it."<\/p>\n

Jones:<\/strong> "That was an up-yours."<\/p>\n

Cornes:<\/strong> "They don't invite the cameras into the rooms."<\/p>\n

Matthew Lloyd weighed in: "What's wrong if they do make it an up-yours, to say, 'You're not allowing us, AFL, to wear it on game day. We're not just going to lie down, we're going to make a statement after the game."<\/p>\n

Jones:<\/strong> "But mate, it was a schoolyard prank. That's all that was."<\/p>\n

Lloyd:<\/strong> "But it's got people talking. So do you think they lose face out of this now, or not?"<\/p>\n

Jones:<\/strong> "I think they do. I think they do in some sense."<\/p>\n

Cornes:<\/strong> "What did they have to lose? They've said no. They don't care about that (face). [Fans] absolutely loved it, they're in their own change rooms, they're not on the ground."<\/p>\n

Jones said that the Power may have lost allies in their prison bars plight over the prank.<\/p>\n

"There were even Collingwood people supportive of Port Adelaide wearing the jumper in Showdowns and now I think…" he said.<\/p>\n

Cornes replied: "What, now they're upset they're wearing them in the change rooms? They were happy for them to wear it on the ground, Collingwood fans, now they're unhappy they're wearing it in the change rooms?"<\/p>\n

Jones:<\/strong> "Yeah, because that's just a cheap stunt. You tell me in your heart that you're OK with that."<\/p>\n

Cornes:<\/strong> "I'm OK with that. In their own change rooms. It is now time to move on, as I said, and focus on the Western Bulldogs."<\/p>\n
