Terrifying on the field but warm and gentle off it, Taniela Tupou delivered an emotional Mother's Day message after winning an epic Super Rugby AU title with the Queensland Reds<\/a> on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

"The last time I saw my family was back in 2019, so this one is for you mum," the 'Tongan Thor' said in a post-match chat with Sonny Bill Williams on Nine and Stan Sport.<\/p>\n

"It's Mother's Day tomorrow so happy Mother's Day."<\/p>\n

Williams put a comforting arm around Tupou as he started to choke up at a heaving Suncorp Stadium packed with 41,637 fans celebrating Aussie rugby's revival.<\/p>\n

"To get the win like that, I'm lost for words," Tupou said.<\/p>\n

"I'm so proud of the boys and we'll enjoy that win."<\/p>\n

The title marks a career high point for one of Australia's truly world class players.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old's journey has been a fascinating one: Tongan born then a YouTube sensation in Auckland schoolboy rugby yet harbouring a burning desire to represent Australia.<\/p>\n

He moved to Brisbane in 2015 and has thrived under Brad Thorn's tutelage at the Reds.<\/p>\n

"Crazy, crazy game," coach Thorn told former All Blacks teammate Williams.<\/p>\n

"You think playing is hard. Oh my goodness. You're just sitting in there and your guts are turning inside out. Absolute heart got them over the line."<\/p>\n

Match-winner and captain James O'Connor was beaming and with good reason after scoring a try five minutes into added time to snatch a 19-16 stunner.<\/p>\n

He has completely turned his life and career around at the Reds and at 30 can play good rugby at No.10 for another five years if he wants to.<\/p>\n

"It was a tough contest," O'Connor said.<\/p>\n

"That was a Test match. Super proud of my boys. I'm bloody stoked. It was about waiting until they got sucked in and the rest is history."<\/p>\n
