Cameron Green has been hailed as possibly Australia's best young prospect since Ricky Ponting<\/a>, but Test legend Ian Chappell sees a quality in the Western Australian wonder that has gone under the radar.<\/p>\n

Green continued to mount a strong case for a Test debut on his way to 125 not out<\/a> in Australia A's three-day match against India A at Drummoyne Oval.<\/p>\n

The 21-year-old finished with 12 fours, a six and a healthy strike-rate of 61.88, and played some glorious drives through cover and over bowlers' heads.<\/p>\n

But Chappell said there were signs of rust that showed he's not only talented but tough.<\/p>\n

"He was a little scratchy, which he was the other night in the international," Chappell told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"But he's shown one thing: that he can be a bit scratchy at the start but he knows how to fight his way through it, which is a good quality."<\/p>\n

Headlining India's bowling attack in the first three-day fixture are gun off-spinner Ravi Ashwin, who's taken 365 Test wickets, and right-arm quick Umesh Yadav, who's regularly hit 150 kilometres per hour in his 46-Test career.<\/p>\n

But missing from the visitors' attack are veteran right-arm quick Mohammed Shami, the ultra-talented Jasprit Bumrah and wizardly left-arm orthodox spinner Ravi Jadeja, who has 213 Test scalps.<\/p>\n

Chappell says Green's next challenge is to make runs at Test level.<\/p>\n

"He's already proved that he can make a lot of runs at first-class level, so what you need to find out now is can he make them at the next level?" Chappell said.<\/p>\n

"This is a step up from first-class but it's not quite the step to Test level.<\/p>\n

"But it doesn't hurt your confidence that you get runs against bowlers that you might have to face later on in the Test series."<\/p>\n

Australian Test skipper Tim Paine made 44 runs and spent 29 overs with Green in the middle.<\/p>\n

But Chappell, who captained Australia in 30 Tests between 1971 and 1975, said batting with the skipper would carry little weight when it comes to Green's potential selection.<\/p>\n

"I don't think it makes any difference at all who you get them with," Chappell said.<\/p>\n

"All it's done is tell the selectors what they probably already knew: that he was a pretty good player and that he was likely to be an Australian player for some time to come."<\/p>\n

Australia A and India A will play another three-day match set to begin on Friday at the SCG.<\/p>\n
