ARLC boss Peter V'landys<\/a> says consideration will be given to stripping Jarryd Hayne<\/a> of his Dally M medals following his rape conviction, but not before his appeal is heard.<\/p>\n

Hayne was yesterday sentenced to five years and nine months in jail<\/a>, with a non-parole period of three years and eight months, after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a Newcastle woman on the night of the 2018 NRL grand final.<\/p>\n

The judge found that Hayne knew the woman was not consenting, but assaulted her regardless.<\/p>\n

Hayne this morning flagged his intention to appeal his conviction<\/a> in the NSW Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

The former Parramatta fullback won the Dally M award for the NRL's best and fairest twice during his career, in 2009 and again in 2014 when he shared the honour with North Queensland's Johnathan Thurston.<\/p>\n

The seriousness of the charges against Hayne have prompted calls for him to be stripped of the awards.<\/p>\n

V'landys told Radio 2GB that's very much an option, but the league will wait for the appeals process to run its course.<\/p>\n

"It's not hard to take them away, but we don't want to prejudice the legal process," he said.<\/p>\n

"We would like to see Jarryd exhaust his appeal process, once he does that we'll make a decision.<\/p>\n

"Naturally we'll consult the Parramatta club that he played with, but I think it's a bit early to be considering it.<\/p>\n

"There will be consideration given, and the Commission's already discussed it, but we don't wish to prejudice the process."<\/p>\n

Hayne played 191 matches for Parramatta in two separate stints, having also played for Gold Coast following his brief stint in the NFL with San Francisco.<\/p>\n

He was also named New South Wales State of Origin player of the year on three occasions, and in 2019 was announced as part of the NRL's team of the decade.<\/p>\n
