Ash Barty is into the Madrid Open<\/a> semi-finals after beating friendly rival Petra Kvitova in three sets in their quarters match.<\/p>\n

Aussie world No.1 Barty beat the world No.12 Czech 6-1 3-6 6-3. She will face Paula Badosa in the semis, after the Spanish player beat Belinda Bencic 6-4 7-5.<\/p>\n

Barty was again in fine form – though she was left laughing after a point late in the first set where she completely lost a lobbed shot from Kvitova in the sun, leaving her unable to even attempt a return.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, the Aussie's all-court game proved too strong against the left-handed Wimbledon winner. She has now squared her career head-to-head with Kvitova at 5-5, having lost their first four clashes.<\/p>\n

"I think Petra and I, we respect each other as tennis players, and I respect her immensely as a person. I love who she is as a person," Barty said after the Madrid match.<\/p>\n

"On the court it's more than just about the result. I think we love to compete, we love to test each other, we love to test ourselves."<\/p>\n

Barty is set for another big boost to her top ranking in Madrid, with world No.2 Naomi Osaka bombing out in the second round.<\/p>\n
