Carlton surged late to collect a 16-point victory over arch rivals Essendon at the MCG<\/a>, but a couple of footy greats believe there's an element of their game that needs urgent attention as they strive to break their finals drought.<\/p>\n

David Teague's men fought back from a 21-point deficit to record a 19.9 (123) to 16.11 (107) victory, banking their third win of the season in their pursuit of playing finals footy for the first time since 2013.<\/p>\n

But St Kilda icon Nick Riewoldt pulled Carlton up during the half-time break on their lack of intensity in defence.<\/p>\n

Carlton have now conceded more than 90 points in five games this season – and Riewoldt says their poor two-way running is a major reason why they consistently leak so many goals.<\/p>\n

"<\/strong>They needed to (find a way) because halfway through the second quarter they'd conceded eight goals," Riewoldt said on Fox Footy.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

"They are jogging, it's pedestrian, they let the play unfold and it looks like three players on one in your own 30 metres. There's a time to dig in and chase defensively. Carlton are too inconsistent at that part of the game."<\/p>\n

North Melbourne great David King pointed out a moment from one minute into the match where Carlton players had applied very little pressure.<\/p>\n

"They give Essendon the ability to move the ball coast to coast, so it's always a two- to three-goal margin," King said.<\/p>\n

Riewoldt added: "It's a common theme within their losses."<\/p>\n

"They bleed big when they lose momentum."<\/p>\n
