David Warner<\/a> has been sensationally sacked as captain of his IPL<\/a> franchise, Sunrisers Hyderabad, with New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson<\/a> to take over the role mid-season.<\/p>\n

The Sunrisers have endured a terrible start to the IPL season, currently at the bottom of the table, and Warner's scratchy form has not helped the team's cause.<\/p>\n

The Australian notched his 50th IPL century in the team's most recent outing against the Chennai Super Kings, but was criticised for his unusually low strike rate after managing to score just 57 runs in 55 deliveries.<\/p>\n

Warner's axing as captain was confirmed in a club statement on Saturday, with the club also indicating that the 34-year-old could be dropped from the playing XI moving forward.<\/p>\n

"Sunrisers Hyderabad would like to announce that Kane Williamson will be taking over the captaincy for tomorrow's match and for the remainder of IPL 2021," the statement read.<\/p>\n

"The team management has also made the decision that they will be changing their overseas combination for tomorrow's match against Rajasthan Royals.<\/p>\n

"This decision has not come lightly as the management respects the enormous impact David Warner has had for the franchise over a number of years. <\/p>\n

"As we face the remainder of the season we are sure David will continue to help us strive for success both on and off the field."<\/p>\n

Warner led Sunrisers to their maiden IPL title back in 2016 but was stripped of the captaincy in the wake of the ball-tampering saga back in 2018, with Williamson taking over.<\/p>\n

While he has scored 193 runs in six innings, his lowly strike rate of 110.28 has been heavily criticised. Warner's strike rate remains the lowest of any player who has scored over 75 runs this season.<\/p>\n

The Australian's axing comes as many of his countrymen attempted to flee India amid the country's escalating COVID-19 crisis.<\/p>\n

Adam Zampa and Kane Richardson landed back in Australia this week after leaving the IPL bubble following Prime Minister Scott Morrison's attempt to shut the borders.<\/p>\n
