Gun Melbourne recruit Ben Brown is set to run out for his first game against former club North Melbourne at Hobart's Blundstone Arena on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Brown has recovered from February's knee surgery and worked his way into form during three VFL games, setting himself up for his first Demons appearance.<\/p>\n

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin said the 287-goal spearhead would give the Demons an enormous boost, even amid the club's best start to a season in 56 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"We're going to play Ben Brown. That is something we will do," Goodwin said.<\/p>\n

"We think we can improve our team and he deserves a spot, so we're going to pick him.<\/p>\n

"He's had three weeks of really strong footy. He's ready to play after a really big training block and we think he can make our team better."<\/p>\n

Brown crossed from the Kangaroos to the Demons via last year's trade period, rounding out a seven-year stay at North Melbourne that reaped 130 games.<\/p>\n

The Tasmanian was of exceptional service to North Melbourne, booting upward of 60 goals in three seasons in a row between 2017 and 2019.<\/p>\n

But he turned 28 in November and North Melbourne's situation is a polar opposite to Melbourne's. The Kangaroos began a rebuild in the off-season, whereas the Demons are in a wide-open premiership window, meaning a regular AFL footballer of Brown's ilk was a mismatch at Arden Street but ideal for Goodwin.<\/p>\n

"It's ironic that it's worked out like that (his first game against North). It certainly wasn't planned that way or not why we selected him," Goodwin said.<\/p>\n

"We selected him because we think he's ready.<\/p>\n

"We're not afraid to make these moves, even though we're performing strongly.<\/p>\n

"We think there's an opportunity here where we've got a player in form and he can make our team better."<\/p>\n
