Ross Lyon<\/a> has launched a passionate defence of Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley<\/a>, saying he doesn't understand the "narrative" surrounding Buckley's position.<\/p>\n

Buckley's future as the Magpies' senior coach has been a hot talking point in recent weeks after Collingwood's 1-5 start to the season.<\/p>\n

Currently in the final year of his deal and still unsigned, Buckley officially declared that he would like to remain Collingwood's senior coach<\/a> beyond his current contract.<\/p>\n

Lyon, who coached Fremantle and St Kilda, remained adamant that Buckley was the right man to lead Collingwood back to the promised land.<\/p>\n

"I don't understand the narrative," he told Nine's Footy Classified<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"(Buckley is) 2018 coach of the year, one kick off a premiership, 11 players under 30 games, five players under 10 games, they haven't been blown away in a game.<\/p>\n

"No De Goey, Adams, Howe and Elliott and we're talking about is he coaching well. He just said that the list profile has resulted in some decisions. I still think it goes back to the pre-season.<\/p>\n

"It's a results and win-loss conversation driven by the media, you can't make it about wins and losses."<\/p>\n

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd responded to Lyon by stating that the AFL was a win-loss business, but Lyon continued his defence of Buckley, preferring his experience to a less-experienced potential replacement.<\/p>\n

"It doesn't make it right, not when you've coached for 10 years," he said.<\/p>\n

"His training wheels are off. We're seeing other clubs bringing in whatever they're bringing in as support coaches and he's through that. He knows what he's doing.<\/p>\n

"He's been calm, he's been measured and I just don't like the narrative, I think it's wrong and he's doing everything right."<\/p>\n

Lyon said that Buckley openly declaring his interest in remaining the club's coach was potentially aimed at his players, adding that the club should only make a move at season's end.<\/p>\n

"If you're judging whether you're singing him or not, how about you let him see out his contract and make a full assessment," he said.<\/p>\n

"Let him and the players get through the year, review and review heavily and then make a considered decision.<\/p>\n

"I'm not sure how you can dismiss his coaching ability because they're 1-5."<\/p>\n
