Australia's Olympic athletes and officials will be given priority access to COVID-19 vaccines ahead of this year's Tokyo Games.<\/p>\n

National Cabinet agreed today on athletes and support staff being vaccinated, with approximately 2050 individuals identified by the AOC and Paralympics Australia found to be eligible.<\/p>\n

It comes after Japan declared its third state of emergency<\/a> just three months ahead of the Olympics.<\/p>\n

"We want to see our athletes head to Tokyo to compete and then return to Australia safely," Health Minister Greg Hunt said.<\/p>\n

Pfizer or the AstraZeneca vaccine will be available for those aged over 50.<\/p>\n

"While vulnerable Australians remain an absolute priority as the vaccine rollout continues, National Cabinet understands the pressure our high-performance athletes have been facing as the Tokyo Games draw closer," Sports Minister Richard Colbeck said in a statement.<\/p>\n

"This will be a very different Olympics and Paralympics, but our athletes deserve the opportunity to compete."<\/p>\n

Australian Olympic Committee chief executive Matt Carroll the "added layer of assurance" would be a welcoming addition to the hard work put in by everyone involved.<\/p>\n

"There will be hundreds of very grateful athletes, coaches and their families relieved to know that their hard work over five years has been worth it," he said.<\/p>\n

"This added layer of assurance is what they were seeking."<\/p>\n
