League legend Peter Sterling says "alarm bells should be ringing" for Michael Maguire after Wests Tigers powerbrokers publicly assured he had the unequivocal support of the board.<\/a><\/p>\n

Maguire finds himself in the hot-seat this week after an ugly start to the season culminated in a 40-6 ANZAC Day humiliation at the hands of Manly.<\/a><\/p>\n

Just hours after the loss, reports surfaced that Tigers executives were planning to hold a series of crisis meetings to determine the premiership-winning coach's future at the joint-venture.<\/a><\/p>\n

Those plans were quickly put on ice after public blowback, forcing the club to come out in a show of support for their coach who has managed to steer the club to a single win from seven outings this season.<\/p>\n

But the Tigers' show of solidarity should do little to abate concern of a mutiny at Concord, according to Sterling, who urged Maguire to keep his "wits" about him.<\/p>\n

"Full support of the board? Alarm bells are ringing," Sterling told Wide World of Sports' Sterlo's Wrap<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

"Once the board start coming out and saying, 'We're not talking about his future, that's safe,' you do start to worry. Rugby league has a history of that not ending well.<\/p>\n

"It's a tough gig, he understands that, he knows that, he's a hard-headed coach and he's going to need his wits about him and the full support of his players to get them out of this hole."<\/p>\n

Last night, Maguire informed Wide World of Sports Radio on 2GB, that he had remained in constant dialogue with the board<\/a> and that he had not been informed of any threat to his position.<\/p>\n

It sounded eerily familiar to the highly-publicised exit of former Sharks coach John Morris<\/a> who had the rug pulled out from under him after he was told the same thing by Cronulla just under a fortnight ago.<\/p>\n

In that saga, Morris was effectively shown the door after the club, somewhat controversially, appointed Roosters assistant Craig Fitzgibbon to the top job for 2022 while assuring Morris' security.<\/p>\n

"We're only into Round 7 but having said that we have already seen a coach bite the dust," Sterling said.<\/p>\n

"Once they start to talk in the press about the situation that seems to steamroll a little bit as well."<\/p>\n

In 51 games with the Tigers, Maguire has only managed 19 wins – a strike rate of 37.3 per cent.<\/p>\n

It's understood that the biggest concern to those at the club is the lack of improvement on the field despite a noticeably stronger roster year-on-year.<\/p>\n

Sterling said Maguire was still owed time by the franchise in his pursuit to revamp the culture and mould the roster he largely inherited into a genuine top-eight contender.<\/p>\n

"You can't have a revolving door," Sterling said, pointing to the Tigers' five different coaches over nine years.<\/p>\n

"You inherit a roster as a coach, you've got to try and beat that into shape how you want it. We're getting closer to that. But I think there's still a bit of time for Michael Maguire.<\/p>\n

"Fifty-one games, he's a premiership-winning coach, we are still early in the season. I know it's a results-driven business. They've finished ninth on a couple of occasions, a little bit of a joke about that now, in regards that they're just not good enough to go into the top eight.<\/p>\n

\"Tigers<\/p>\n

"But If they win a couple of games, the pressure goes off. The spotlight is now on them, it was on North Queensland at one stage, it went to Canterbury, it's now the turn of the Wests Tigers \u2013 and they've got to react to that.<\/p>\n

"There are a couple of coaches there who look very qualified to come back into first-grade coaching. There's a lot of pressure on to get that 'W'.<\/p>\n

"At the moment, Maguire is safe, is there a better option? That might need to be determined down the track. But if they win next week and the week after that, then we'll forget about this conversation."<\/p>\n
