Carlton coach David Teague<\/a> has been urged to axe veteran trio Eddie Betts<\/a>, Marc Murphy<\/a> and Levi Casboult amid the team's slow start to the 2021 season.<\/p>\n

Despite being a popular pick to make the top eight, the Blues have won just two of their first six matches and find themselves 13th on the ladder with a percentage of 93.2.<\/p>\n

Betts, Murphy and Casboult have all struggled to start the season, and Hawthorn great Dermott Brereton questioned why the trio have been preferred to younger players.<\/p>\n

"I'm just a little critical that they seem to drop the same young blokes each time and as I said on Saturday morning, they've been very kind to some of their players," he told SEN.<\/p>\n

\"Eddie<\/p>\n

"Levi (Casboult) and (Marc) Murphy and Eddie (Betts), they're all fantastic young men, they're all fantastic servants of the club.<\/p>\n

"You earn your games and if you walk away with 294 games, if you walk away with 199 (games), you can look yourself in the eye and say, 'I earnt every one of those. I was gifted nothing'.<\/p>\n

"Someone like Marc Murphy has lost pace. What you want from your half-forward flankers, he can't give that anymore. He's got to be on the inside."<\/p>\n

Brereton's words echoed those of Carlton great David Rhys-Jones, who urged Teague to "shock" his players into action at the selection table.<\/p>\n

"Some hard decisions have to be made at the selection table. At times, it can shock the players into doing something," he told The Age.<\/p>\n

"We haven't been blown out of the water but it's just the mistakes, missed goals. We have older blokes in there that are not producing \u2013 you look at Murphy, Betts and Casboult as the three that stand out, aren't they?"<\/p>\n

Teague's men face a crucial next month of football, with matches against the AFL's two unbeaten teams, Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs, on the horizon.<\/p>\n

However, before taking on the two 6-0 teams, the Blues will have to face a suddenly in-form Essendon side fresh off an ANZAC Day win in Round Seven.<\/p>\n
