The Brisbane Lions will have to manage without Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale<\/a> for an indefinite period with the star midfielder set for ankle surgery. <\/p>\n

Neale injured his ankle in the first quarter of Brisbane's win over Carlton<\/a> and managed to courageously play on, but appeared in obvious pain and avoided kicking at all costs. <\/p>\n

The 27-year-old will go under the knife on Monday to repair the injury, with the club yet to set a timeline on when he will be able to make a return to the field. <\/p>\n

The clash against Carlton proved to be an eventful one for Neale, after he was handed a $1500 fine by the AFL for making contact with umpire Matthew Nicholls<\/a> during the match.<\/p>\n

After having his ankle strapped, Neale tapped Nicholls on the arm after coming up from the bottom of a pack with blood streaming down his forehead. <\/p>\n

Brisbane is set to face Port Adelaide, Fremantle, Gold Coast and Richmond over the next month and could potentially be without its midfield midfield ace for all four matches.<\/p>\n

Announcement of Neale's ankle surgery comes after both the player and Lions coach Chris Fagan admitted that he had been battling through a back injury to start the season.<\/p>\n

The Lions currently sit eighth on the ladder with a 3-3 record after the 18-point win over Carlton in Round Six.<\/p>\n
