Australian boxing great Anthony Mundine has joined NRL star Latrell Mitchell in slamming the singing of the national anthem in the Eora language ahead of the Wallabies' Tr-nations draw with Argentina.<\/p>\n

Led by Olivia Fox, a young Wiradjuri woman from the Newtown High School of Performing Arts, the Wallabies sang an emotional rendition of Advance Australia Fair in both in English and in the Eora language.<\/a> It was the first joint-language performance of the anthem at an international sporting event in Australia.<\/p>\n

The moment was generally well-received as a significant step in recognising first nations people, with the Wallabies also wearing Indigenous-themed jerseys for the match.<\/p>\n

However, Rabbitohs star Mitchell was one of the first indigenous athletes to disapprove of the moment<\/a>, claiming that singing Advance Australia Fair in a different tongue did not solve inherent problems with the song.<\/p>\n

Many Indigenous Australians believe the anthem to be non-representative of their ancient culture, if not racist.<\/a><\/p>\n

Despite the Eora lyrics not being a direct translation of Advance Australia Fair, Mundine echoed the sentiments of Mitchell.<\/p>\n

"For me, bro, how can I put it? It's like kicking someone when they're down. The message of the anthem is wrong. It was putting salt into the wound for Aboriginal men," Mundine told The Daily Telegraph.<\/p>\n

"If they want to change things then actually change the words of the anthem. But you can't just sing the same original text in Aboriginal language and think it's going to fly with people.<\/p>\n

"It got people talking but it still ain't the right message. It looks good and sounded good when the Wallabies sang it and it looks like they're giving back \u2014 but they're not really giving back.<\/p>\n

"The original anthem is racially driven from its inception and now they want to do it in Aboriginal language \u2014 two wrongs don't make it right. The anthem is the theme song for the white Australian policy."<\/p>\n

Mitchell argued that the new version was still unacceptable.<\/p>\n

"When will people understand that changing it to language doesn't change the meaning!" he posted on Instagram with a face-palm emoji.<\/p>\n

"Be proud but understand what you're being proud of. I stand for us, our mob! Be proud of the oldest living culture. Always was, always will be."<\/p>\n
