State of Origin<\/a> is set to return to Optus Stadium for just the second time in history in 2022.<\/p>\n

The NRL, in conjunction with the Western Australian government, announced today that game two of the 2022 series would be hosted by the Perth venue.<\/p>\n

The decision aligns with the NRL's policy of one neutral venue and one home venue for each of the states in the three-match series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The showpiece event will be played in Melbourne this year, followed by Perth in 2022 and Adelaide in 2023.<\/p>\n

"State of Origin is the biggest brand in Australian sport and it now has a truly national footprint,'' said Australian Rugby League commissioner Peter Beattie.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

"When we first took Origin to Perth in 2019 the event was so popular it broke the ground record at the time. We're looking forward to building on that success next year.<\/p>\n

"Perth deserves to host Origin again and we are privileged to bring the contest back."<\/p>\n

A sell-out crowd of 59,721 filled Optus Stadium as the Blues<\/a> defeated the Maroons in game two of the 2019 series, in one of the first-ever major events at the venue.<\/p>\n

Superstar Manly fullback Tom Trbojevic scored a hat-trick as NSW thumped Queensland 38-6.<\/p>\n

The only two NRL games that have been held at Optus Stadium were Melbourne's 36-18 victory over Canterbury in round one of season 2018, as well as the Warriors' 32-20 win over the Rabbitohs in the same round of the 2018 campaign.<\/p>\n
