Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes<\/a> believes Carlton co-captain Patrick Cripps<\/a> is entitled to hold off on re-signing with the club if the poor on-field results continue this season.<\/p>\n

Despite being heralded as a finals contender heading into the year, the Blues have failed to flatter so far with an unenviable 2-3 record through five rounds, including wins over the lowly Gold Coast Suns and a Fremantle side minus skipper Nat Fyfe.<\/p>\n

Cornes, who previously urged Carlton to avoid overpaying for Cripps, turned the heat on the 26-year-old's club this time.<\/p>\n

"I think he's got every right to (look around)," Cornes told Nine's Footy Classified<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"Patrick<\/p>\n

"(He's got a a right), for a player that has won 27 per cent of his games and what he's given to the club, to look around and work out where the direction is.<\/p>\n

"It's going to be his last contract and he's going to commit long-term, you'd want to know that they are on the right track and right now you wouldn't be confident."<\/p>\n

Cornes' comments come amid conjecture over why Cripps is yet to re-commit to the club, despite CEO Cain Liddle's confidence that an extension was around the corner earlier in April.<\/p>\n

"We're working through that process with him and we couldn't be more comfortable with where that's at," Liddle told 3AW on April 4.<\/p>\n

"He's as invested a player as I've ever seen at a football club."<\/p>\n

The Age's Sam McClure added that there was no indication from Cripps' camp that a contract announcement was imminent.<\/p>\n

"Three weeks have passed (since Liddle's comments) and he still hasn't signed and there doesn't seem to be any more solid evidence that he is going to re-sign tomorrow," McClure told Footy Classified<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I spoke to his management today and they offered a very abrupt 'no comment', which was intriguing of itself.<\/p>\n

"The next four weeks are huge for the Carlton Football Club, not just for Paddy Cripps and where they see him, but for where Cripps sees the club going."<\/p>\n
