Canterbury's<\/a> Jack Hetherington could be out for as long as six weeks after being charged by the match review committee following yesterday's loss to North Queesland.<\/a><\/p>\n

Hetherington was sent-off by referee Ashley Klein<\/a> in the 55th minute, after catching Valentine Holmes<\/a> with an old-fashioned 'coat-hanger.'<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs forward has been hit with a grade three careless high tackle charge, which carries a base penalty of 300 points (three matches).<\/p>\n

However, Hetherington attracts a loading for prior offences, as well as carry-over points.<\/p>\n

That means that even with an early guilty plea, he'll miss five matches, a penalty that rises to six weeks if he fights the charge at the judiciary and loses.<\/p>\n

Hetherington was the first player sent from the field since Chad Townsend in round 17, 2020. Speaking after the match, coach Trent Barrett appeared to be resigned to a suspension for Hetherington.<\/p>\n

"He certainly caught him high," Barrett said.<\/p>\n

"It wasn't an intentional shot from Jack, he just hung his arm out and Val's OK."<\/p>\n

The send-off actually sparked the Bulldogs into action, and two tries brought them to within six points of North Queensland with just nine minutes remaining, although a Cowboys try in the 78th minute stretched the eventual margin to 12.<\/p>\n

"That's one of the positives you could take out of it, they were gallant, but we shouldn't have been in that position," Barrett said.<\/p>\n

"We turned over too much cheap ball, failed to build any pressure at all when we were in the game at 6-all at half time.<\/p>\n

"We played some of our best footy through that middle third of the field when we did have 12 men. There's certainly some lessons around where those errors are coming from."<\/p>\n

Hetherington's likely absence continues a horror start to the season for the Bulldogs, who are winless after six matches, and short-priced favourites with the bookmakers to finish last.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs play the Sharks at Kogarah on Saturday.<\/p>\n
