McLaren's Lando Norris has been left gutted after throwing away a position-three start at the Italian Grand Prix<\/a> when he breached track limits on a scorching qualifying lap.<\/p>\n

The young Briton set Imola abuzz on his final effort in qualifying three when he flew around the track to record a lap time of 1:14.454, a time would have placed him 0.044 seconds ahead of Red Bull star Max Verstappen on the grid.<\/p>\n

But Norris' time was deleted when stewards discovered that the 21-year-old had run wide on the Piratella left-hander, meaning he's set to begin the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in position seven.<\/p>\n

"I'm pretty disappointed, pretty annoyed with myself," Norris said.<\/p>\n

"I think it was a very good day until then. I think the team did an awesome job, the car really came alive in quali. We made a lot of improvements from Friday (in practice), but on that one lap that I don't need to make a mistake on I effed it all up."<\/p>\n

Norris' blunder means he's qualified one place behind McLaren teammate Daniel Ricciardo for the second race in a row, after the season-opener in Bahrain last month.<\/p>\n

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton secured pole as Red Bull's Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen snared second and third on the grid respectively, while Charles Leclerc and Pierre Gasly grabbed the next two spots.<\/p>\n

Norris says misjudgments are easy to make at such high speeds.<\/p>\n

"From the outside it looks a lot easier just to stay within the lines than what it is inside [the cockpit]," Norris said.<\/p>\n

"But when you're in quali and you're in Q3 and you have an opportunity to be P2, P3 or score your best result in qualifying, you're pushing, and when you're going at such a speed and at such a high-speed corner, misjudging by this amount is [easy]."<\/p>\n
