Steve Smith<\/a> should make a return as Australian cricket captain if Aaron Finch is out injured, former Aussie skipper Mark Taylor says.<\/p>\n

Smith has not captained Australia since the 2018 Cape Town ball-tampering scandal<\/a> but his two-year ban on holding leadership positions is over.<\/p>\n

Finch injured his hamstring<\/a> in the first T20 match against India on Friday, putting him in doubt for Sunday's second game<\/a> at the SCG. Vice-captain Pat Cummins isn't playing.<\/p>\n

Matthew Wade has been touted as a potential stand-in captain but Taylor believes that Australia should bite the bullet and reinstate Smith.<\/p>\n

"If he (Finch) is not available, I personally would like to see Steve Smith captain the Australian side," Taylor told TODAY on Sunday.<\/p>\n

"I've said for quite a while, there's no doubt mistakes were made two and a half years ago now in Cape Town. There's been penalties and they've been served.<\/p>\n

"To me, now we've got to move on. Steve Smith is still looked at by this side as a leader in that team; even Finch, the one-day\/T20 captain and [Test skipper] Tim Paine go to Steve Smith for advice at times. He's a senior player.<\/p>\n

"I know there might be some people out in the community who have a problem potentially with Steve Smith but I think tonight's match, should Finch not play, is a great opportunity for the selectors to say, 'We'll give him the T20 captaincy and see how it goes'.<\/p>\n

"You're not making a call forever. You've got these two T20s before the Test matches start, where Tim Paine will captain, I think to test the waters."<\/p>\n

However, Taylor said that he was unsure if Smith, who also served a one-year playing ban over the ball-tampering fiasco, currently desired a return to the Australian captaincy.<\/p>\n

"I honestly don't know. I don't know if he'll want the extra pressure, the extra microscope that will be on him," Taylor said.<\/p>\n

"But Steve Smith obviously prior to Cape Town, was doing a very good job with the Australian side. I'm sure he'd like another opportunity."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
