Cricket greats Darren Lehmann<\/a> and Darren Berry have been left scratching their heads at New South Wales' handling of Nathan Lyon<\/a> on day one of the Sheffield Shield final<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After being bundled out for just 143 courtesy of a five-wicket haul from Michael Neser, NSW captain Kurtis Patterson did not bring Lyon into the attack until the 19th over of Queensland's first innings. <\/p>\n

Queensland reached stumps on 1-58, with Bryce Street (14 not out) and Marnus Labuschange (23 not out), but Lyon immediately caused problems for the left-handed Street.<\/p>\n

"They have not put enough balls in the right area, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood," Berry said after the NSW openers' spells.<\/p>\n

"They've been okay, but okay with only 150 on the board, they had to be absolutely pristine, precise, and they weren't.<\/p>\n

"I'm bringing Nathan Lyon on. Why? Because the ball's hard, it is biting into the surface, there's a left-hander at the crease and we've now had 10 overs of right-arm medium pace and Star's left-arm quicks and it has not worked."<\/p>\n

"I just get that feeling that there has to be another wicket (today), and Nathan Lyon is the one to get one or two quickly," Lehmann added.<\/p>\n

"With only 10 overs, he needs (to bowl) five." <\/p>\n

Lyon bowled four overs before stumps, finishing with tidy figures of 0-4. Hazlewood was the sole wicket-taker for New South Wales, when he caught Joe Burns nicking behind for 20.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Patterson played a lone hand for his side, top scoring with 43, as Neser and fellow paceman Jack Wildermuth ran through the New South Wales batting line-up.<\/p>\n

Patterson and all-rounder Sean Abbott (23) were the only two players to score over 20 runs in what was a dismal batting display.<\/p>\n

Queensland will hope to build a solid first-innings lead when play resumes on Friday at 9:30am AEST, with skipper Usman Khawaja and former Australian Test opener Matt Renshaw scheduled to come in next.<\/p>\n
