You can&#x27;t go out and panic buy just for the sake of spending your money.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Johns was referencing a 2018 spending spree that saw those three players arrive at the club on monster deals, with the trio soaking up more than $2 million of the salary cap.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"78f50d5d-ae52-4736-861f-65f2931fba21\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/78f50d5d-ae52-4736-861f-65f2931fba21\" alt=\"Ben Matulino\" data-width=\"1396\" data-height=\"785\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Matulino signed a three-year contract with the club but retired in his second season.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Is Russell Packer still on contract?&quot; Fittler asked.<\/p>\n<p>The 31-year-old also signed on in 2018, but managed just 33 games in the four seasons since, including one bench appearance this season.<\/p>\n<p>Both Packer and Reynolds, who left the club for the Super League this season, were slammed <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/nrl\/josh-reynolds-russell-packer-walk-out-wests-tigers\/6d9978e5-aebc-45fc-b9f4-f88ee4add2ae\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"by club CEO Justin Pascoe for leaving a game early last season\">by club CEO Justin Pascoe for leaving a game early last season<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The actions are not acceptable from my perspective. We are focused on ensuring every single person, player, coach, administrator, board member&#x27;s actions are in complete alignment with the expectation of higher standards,&quot; Pascoe said last year.<\/p>\n<p><img data-video-id=\"6248328984001\" src=\"https:\/\/vms-network-images-prod.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com\/2021\/04\/352851\/pickerImage.jpg\" alt=\"NRL Highlights: The Cowboys hold off a valiant Tigers effort to win at Leichhardt\" data-vms-id=\"ref:ckncyf9gs005e0irpqk0w93aq\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But it isn&#x27;t just that 2018 spending spree that has ruined the Tigers since the departure of three of their comically named &#x27;big four&#x27; of James Tedesco, Mitchell Moses, Aaron Woods and Luke Brooks. Moses Mbye is locked in until the end of 2022 with an estimated $800,000-a-year contract &#8211; and although a classy player, has been used off the bench for several games this year <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/nrl\/wests-tigers-grant-moses-mbye-permission-to-talk-rival-clubs\/505abf16-08fb-410c-a5e8-a725c6a04731\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"and is actively seeking other options for next year\">and is actively seeking other options for next year<\/a>. Even Mbye himself has admitted the Tigers haven&#x27;t got value for money out of him.<\/p>\n<p>Centre Joey Leilua has been in and out of first grade this year, also on an estimated $700,000-a-season &#8211; while Luke Brooks <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/nrl\/wests-tigers-luke-brooks-michael-maguire-insane-brad-fittler-andrew-johns\/93dd362a-2fc5-40be-9ffa-b06a0bf44dc8\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"is currently on a four-year contract worth $2.4 million, expiring at the end of 2023\">is currently on a four-year contract worth $2.4 million, expiring at the end of 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Teams are more nervous than ever to take risks on long-term deals, with the pressure to nail every personnel decision even greater than usual after the salary cap was reduced for the next two years.<\/p>\n<p>The cap dipped to $9.02 million this season \u2013 down from $9.6 million under the original CBA, and $9.11 million in 2022 from a planned $9.7 million.<\/p>\n<p><img data-video-id=\"6248938196001\" src=\"https:\/\/vms-network-images-prod.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com\/2021\/04\/353286\/pickerImage.jpg\" alt=\"QLDER: Should the Titans chase the Block of Cheese? - Round 5\" data-vms-id=\"ref:ckngw3kxl006b0gphh848c6sc\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#x27;s been a tough start to the season for the Tigers, winning just one of their opening five games and <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/nrl\/nrl-news-2021-wests-tigers-north-queensland-cowboys-bunker-controversy\/c57362fe-70fe-463b-a187-3c862a02c880\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"capitulating at Leichhardt against the Cowboys on Sunday\">capitulating at Leichhardt against the Cowboys on Sunday<\/a> and Brooks has copped the lion share of the blame. Johns says that&#x27;s been unfair on the halfback.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;He&#x27;s had a lot of different five-eighths, a lot of combinations, different fullbacks,&quot; Johns said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I watched him closely coming through the 20s and thought &#x27;this bloke&#x27;s the next one&#x27; &#8211; and he exploded into first grade.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;So whether he needs a good cuddle, I just really don&#x27;t know. He&#x27;s not that bad a player, there&#x27;s a much better player in there. How do you get it out?
