F1 legend Martin Brundle has labelled Daniel Ricciardo's move to Renault from Red Bull a "mistake" but understands why the Australian needed a change of scenery.<\/p>\n
Speaking to In the Fast Lane podcast, Brundle praised the Aussie's move from Renault to McLaren, but said his exit from Red Bull hurt his career for a period of time. However, the move to McLaren, is exactly what Ricciardo needed.<\/p>\n
"Unless somehow or other he can get into a Mercedes, where else would he go?" Brundle told the podcast.<\/p>\n

"I can't see him going back (to Red Bull). He probably should have stayed at Red Bull, but he felt all the love was in Max's (Verstappen) direction and I can understand that completely.<\/p>\n
"Renault was a mistake which we all kind of suspected at the time, but I think that was him needing to get out of Red Bull as much as anything."<\/p>\n
Brundle added that Ricciardo and McLaren's partnership has a real chance of making gains if they stay patient and commit to getting better together.<\/p>\n
"I do believe if he's got the patience, and they've got the patience, if he sticks with McLaren, that can take him back to the front of the field," Brundle said.<\/p>\n
The second race of the F1 season year takes place at Imola this weekend.<\/p>\n
