Essendon great Matthew Lloyd has urged the GWS Giants to remove incumbent skipper Stephen Coniglio<\/a> from the role in order for Toby Greene<\/a> to assume the mantle.<\/p>\n

With Coniglio sidelined through injury, Greene starred in his first game as the Giants' skipper<\/a>, kicking five goals in the Giants' 30-point win over Collingwood at the MCG.<\/p>\n

The star forward received a ringing endorsement from former captain and current teammate Callan Ward after the game, with Ward suggesting that Greene had the capability to be a full-time skipper.<\/p>\n

Coniglio assumed the role as the sole skipper for the start of the 2020 season, choosing not to be a co-captain alongside Phil Davis, but struggled to capture his brilliant form on the field, culminating in a shock axing towards the end of last season<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Despite Coniglio being just over a season into his role as club captain, Lloyd suggested that relieving the Giants No.3 of the captaincy could reinvigorate his career.<\/p>\n

\"Callan<\/p>\n

"Some players thrive with the captaincy and some it's like a noose around their neck," he told Nine's Footy Classified<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I feel like Stephen Coniglio, it has never sat comfortably with Stephen, whereas Toby, he just rolls with it and I think he inspires the other players. <\/p>\n

"They've got a massive decision to make, and for me, I would make it to be Toby Greene as the Giants' captain. It could get Stephen's career back on track."<\/p>\n

Lloyd's call was echoed by Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes, who pointed to sides in the past who had pivoted away from captaincy choices in quick time.<\/p>\n

"Is it any different to (Luke) Hodge and (Sam) Mitchell or (Rory) Sloane and (Taylor) Walker?" he asked.<\/p>\n

\"Stephen<\/p>\n

"Admit you got it wrong. Jonas and Wines didn't work at Port Adelaide. Admit it didn't work and move on."<\/p>\n

However, The Age's Sam McClure hit back at the suggestion, saying that it would be a "shocking look" to take the captaincy away from Coniglio.<\/p>\n

"Of course it's different (to previous examples) because he was going to leave for Carlton or Hawthorn and they convinced him to stay for seven years and he wasn't voted in as captain the proper way," he said.<\/p>\n

"To make a guy captain for two years after building the club around him and the future around him for the next seven years, then to take it off him, I think it's a shocking look." <\/p>\n
