Star Melbourne defender Steven May is set to miss up to a month after it was revealed the sickening incident<\/a> in yesterday's game had left him with a fractured eye socket and a concussion.<\/p>\n

A Tom Hawkins elbow collected May's face in Melbourne's 25-point win over Geelong at the MCG, when the Demon and Cat were contesting the footy during the second term.<\/p>\n

Hawkins won the ball, tried to fend off May and, as the 29-year-old attempted to pull him to ground while tugging on the back of his guernsey, a Hawkins elbow clobbered him.<\/p>\n

A bloodied and staggering May was taken from the field and rushed to hospital, rubbing him out for the remainder of the match.<\/p>\n

The former Sun posted on Instagram from his hospital bed today, thanking everyone for their support and labelling Hawkins' elbow "a freak accident".<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Former Collingwood and Richmond forward Brian Taylor gave the same view as Fox Footy rolled through replays of the incident.<\/p>\n

"I would say completely accidental," Taylor said.<\/p>\n

"No trouble there at all."<\/p>\n

If May takes a full month to recover he won't play again until Melbourne's clash with Carlton at the MCG in round nine.<\/p>\n
