Sydney Roosters assistant coach Craig Fitzgibbon has all but agreed to coach the Cronulla Sharks in 2022.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Sydney Morning reports Fitzgibbon has notified the Roosters of his plans to take up the helm at Cronulla next season, pending a commitment from the Sharks in regards to his coaching staff.<\/p>\n

It is believed Fitzgibbon wants full autonomy over who will make up his support staff before putting pen to paper on a deal worth between $1.5m-$1.8m over three years.<\/p>\n

The former NSW star rejected the chance to coach St George Illawarra last year but he is off-contract this year and is tipped to go. Fitzgibbon would follow in the footsteps of his father, Allan, who coached the Sharks in the 1980's.<\/p>\n

It is understood Sharks coach John Morris had several bids for an extension knocked back by the club who look all but set to move in a new direction potentially before the year is over, according to The Herald.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Fitzgibbon told the Herald<\/em> last year that he was ready to coach an NRL team but would wait until 2022 to honour a commitment to Trent Robinson and Nick Politis.<\/p>\n

"I'm ready to be a head coach, I've done a lot of hard work to be ready, but I have an agreement with Nick and Robbo and I'll honour that,'' Fitzgibbon told the Herald<\/em> in June last year.<\/p>\n

Morris is the lowest paid coach in the NRL on a deal worth around $350,000 a season, while Fitzgibbon is currently paid around $300,000 as the highest-paid assistant in the NRL.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
