Geelong coach Chris Scott<\/a> has hit back at suggestions that he is a "hothead" in the coaches box, saying that being handed a suspended fine by the AFL will not cause him to change his ways.<\/p>\n

Scott was given a $10,000 suspended sanction<\/a> for his role in a heated quarter-time exchange with the Brisbane Lions players, and while he suggested his "mea culpa is complete", he said he understood the reasons behind the sanction.<\/p>\n

While being accepting of his fine, Scott claimed that he was in "complete control" in the quarter-time exchange against Brisbane.<\/p>\n

When questioned over whether he needed to change his demeanour in the coaches box after the fine, the Geelong coach's stance was clear.<\/p>\n

"I made a decision a long time ago, in the box in particular, from some advice from people in footy that I really respect, that it's difficult to keep your calm for the whole day and you need to find a time to release, and the coaches box is your sanctuary," he told Nine's Footy Classified<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I almost never, without some sort of method, lose my temper with the players. The coaches box is my release to an extent.<\/p>\n

"(The vision) is a bit embarrassing for me, but I do feel that if I had to make a choice to be more invested in a game and defend my players and be in the game, as opposed to being too calm and too passive, yeah, I'd choose the former.<\/p>\n

"I think you need to be invested in the game to the point where it's visible to your players and your people.<\/p>\n

"That does run a risk of boiling over a little bit, but I would contend that you should speak to people inside Geelong and get a feel for how often I'm calm and composed as opposed to aggressive.<\/p>\n

"What you see in one or two grabs don't reflect the course of a few hours of a game."<\/p>\n

Scott also denied a suggestion made by Eddie McGuire that the AFL and the umpiring fraternity had a problem with his demonstrative nature.<\/p>\n

"I don't think Ed knows what he's talking about to be honest," he said.<\/p>\n

"There are some people that I really respect at the AFL who are strong personalities and would pass that information onto me if they felt that way, and they certainly wouldn't pass it onto Ed without passing it onto me.<\/p>\n

"I've got a lot of respect for Ed as well, but I think he's just made that part up."<\/p>\n

The 44-year-old added that dialogue between coaches and umpires and rival players were commonplace in the AFL, saying that he didn't want a ban on communication.<\/p>\n

"Those sorts of interactions happen between coaches and umpires a lot, some of them get caught on film, very few of them probably," he said.<\/p>\n

"I wouldn't go down that path (of banning communication). The chances of something happening at AFL level are as close to zero as you can get, but that's not the point, the point is at lower levels if that's seen to be encouraged, it could escalate really quickly.<\/p>\n

"This is all about image, it's about appearance and the message that it might send, and I'm supportive of that."<\/p>\n
