(69) to 9. 10. (64) win\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10. 9. (69) to 9. 10. (64) win<\/a> at the MCG.<\/p>\n<p>After goals to Mitch Lewis and Dylan Moore drew the Hawks within two goals of the Cats, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/chad-wingard\" title=\"Chad Wingard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chad Wingard<\/a> thought he had sliced into the lead yet again with 8:49 left on the clock.<\/p>\n<p>Wingard&#x27;s 45m set shot from a slight angle floated through the goals, but Geelong ruckman Rhys Stanley convinced the goal umpire that he had gotten a finger on the ball before it crossed the goal line, resulting in the umpire&#x27;s soft signal being touched.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"846a572d-7cda-4594-bedc-60dfd562c59c\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/846a572d-7cda-4594-bedc-60dfd562c59c\" alt=\"Cam Guthrie Geelong vs Hawthorn\" data-width=\"1396\" data-height=\"785\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Replays did not show that Stanley had definitely touched the ball, but also did not show that he hadn&#x27;t touched the ball, with the umpire&#x27;s soft signal standing as a result.<\/p>\n<p>Wingard and his Hawthorn teammates were left stunned by the call, as was Brian Taylor on commentary for Seven.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Is there a finger flicked there? I don&#x27;t know whether I can see finger flicked,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Gee, I think Rhys might have been having a piece of the umpire there.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>The touched call closed the margin to 11 points, but a crucial Hawks turnover in the minutes that followed proved to be the final nail in the coffin.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"c595cf2d-0d69-414d-9960-f640e7531f12\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/c595cf2d-0d69-414d-9960-f640e7531f12\" alt=\"Jordan Clark and Jack Henry\" data-width=\"1396\" data-height=\"785\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Cats defender Jack Henry, who spent the game up forward, intercepted a kick towards the corridor before it got to Hawks veteran Shaun Burgoyne, before combining to lethal effect with young gun Jordan Clark who kicked the Cats&#x27; sole final-quarter goal.<\/p>\n<p>Goals to Tyler Brockman and Lewis drew Hawthorn within a kick, but Alastair Clarkson&#x27;s men could not provide one final push as the Cats held on in a thriller.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong&#x27;s efforts were led by Cam Guthrie, who notched a career-best 43 disposals to go along with 11 marks and 10 clearances, while the returning Mitch Duncan added 37 disposals of his own.<\/p>\n<p>A week after using Irishman Mark O&#x27;Connor as a tagger on reigning Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale, Scott again deployed O&#x27;Connor in the negating role to brilliant effect.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"695bb635-67fc-4480-b82e-96a5b0f5657f\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/695bb635-67fc-4480-b82e-96a5b0f5657f\" alt=\"Isaac Smith Liam Shiels\" data-width=\"1396\" data-height=\"785\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lined up against 2018 Brownlow Medallist Tom Mitchell, O&#x27;Connor collected 26 disposals of his own, while holding Mitchell to just 24 disposals, with 18 of those coming as handballs. <\/p>\n<p>Up against his old side, new Cats recruit <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/afl\/isaac-smith\" title=\"Isaac Smith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaac Smith<\/a> received vociferous boos from Hawthorn&#x27;s fans every time he collected the ball.
