Fernando Alonso's much awaited return to Formula One<\/a> was ended by a somewhat bizarre reason, with a stray sandwich wrapper causing the rear brakes to overheat at the Bahrain Grand Prix<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After two seasons out of the sport, Alonso did well to reach Q3 in the Alpine, eventually qualifying ninth, seven places ahead of teammate Esteban Ocon.<\/p>\n

The Spaniard had been running in 11th spot before the second round of pitstops, just behind Yuki Tsunoda, who eventually finished ninth.<\/p>\n

But his race came to an end after 32 laps, when he was called into the pits to retire.<\/p>\n

The team has now confirmed a rear brake duct was blocked.<\/p>\n

"Both cars made a good start and gained some places on the first lap with Fernando holding firm in the top 10," said Alpine F1 Team executive director Marcin Budkowski.<\/p>\n

\"Fernando<\/p>\n

"After his first stop we had a small issue that forced us to reduce the performance of the car.<\/p>\n

"Then after the second stop, a sandwich wrap paper got stuck inside the rear brake duct of Fernando's car, which led to high temperatures and caused some damage to the brake system, so we retired him for safety reasons.<\/p>\n

"It was a very unlucky first race for Fernando considering how strong he looked."<\/p>\n

Alonso, who last raced in F1 in 2018, replaced Daniel Ricciardo<\/a> at Alpine (formerly Renault), and was pleased with his return.<\/p>\n

"Firstly, it was great to be back racing in Formula 1," said the two-time world champion.<\/p>\n

"The start was fun, we gained some places and I had some enjoyable battles with old colleagues.<\/p>\n

\"Fernando<\/p>\n

"However, it was disappointing to not see the chequered flag in the end.<\/p>\n

"The issue we had after the second stop was a rear brake issue as some debris entered the brake ducts and overheated the temperatures of the car.<\/p>\n

"Looking at the race it was very close in the midfield, and just a couple of tenths seems to change the order quite significantly.<\/p>\n

"I think it's going to be a very interesting and competitive season to watch. We'll go again and fight hard in Imola (the next race)."<\/p>\n
