In a boost to the Wallabies<\/a>' chances of wrestling back the Bledisloe Cup, the key piece of silverware is set to be played over three Tests in 2027.<\/p>\n

The trans-Tasman series has been a best-of-two series since 2021, but fresh support for an Anzac Day clash from New Zealand Rugby means an additional third Test is set to be included in next year's action-packed calendar, which concludes with the Rugby World Cup on Australian shores.<\/p>\n

Rugby Australia had been keen to launch the concept in recent years in an effort to challenge the AFL and NRL for eyeballs on one of the country's most revered days, but the governing body failed to get the necessary buy-in from NZR to get it up and running.<\/p>\n

But the arrival of a new NZR board, led by Sydney-based chairman David Kirk, a new coaching team, including former Wallabies coach Dave Rennie, and the support of Super Rugby clubs on both sides of the ditch has seen the concept find a new wave of support.<\/p>\n

It's expected that the concept will be rubberstamped at NZR's Annual General Meeting this week, with an official endorsement on the Anzac Day clash to follow.<\/p>\n

Rugby Australia is expected to host the clash, with Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium and Perth's Optus Stadium likely to vie to stage the match. The profits generated would be split between RA and NZR.<\/p>\n

The Bledisloe opener would likely be held on Saturday, April 24, the day before Anzac Day.<\/p>\n

A double header with the Wallaroos and Black Ferns could also be played, with the two sides squaring off for the first time on Anzac Day this year.<\/p>\n

The Black Ferns won 40-5 on the Sunshine Coast to continue their 32-year undefeated streak over the Wallaroos.<\/p>\n

Super Rugby Pacific, which could move to a conference system in 2027, would be paused for the week.<\/p>\n

Super Round, which was held this year in Christchurch over the Anzac Day weekend and was played before sold out crowds, will likely be moved back to later in the Super Rugby season.<\/p>\n

The Test will give the Wallabies an eighth Test in the build up to the 2027 World Cup, with Les Kiss'<\/a> side to also feature in a fully-fledged six-round Rugby Championship and a final warm-up against Ireland in Canberra.<\/p>\n

Crucially, the Anzac Day clash will also give Rennie, who was announced as Scott Robertson's replacement in early March, another early opportunity to run the rule over his men ahead of the World Cup.<\/p>\n

While Kiss will be unable to call upon his international-based Wallabies because the Test will fall outside the international window, it could present the men in gold the best chance of winning the Bledisloe Cup for the first time since 2002.<\/p>\n

That's because the Wallabies previously couldn't lose a Test to the All Blacks<\/a> in the best-of-two series, given the men in black were the cup holders.<\/p>\n

The Test could also be the first time Super Rugby-bound, NRL star Angus Crichton wears the Wallabies jersey on home soil.<\/p>\n

While Crichton, 30, will likely go on the Wallabies' end of year tour after finishing up his commitments in the NRL with premiership contenders, the Sydney Roosters, the Anzac Day clash will be Australia's first Test on home soil next year.<\/p>\n

His Roosters teammate Mark Nawaqanitawase, who is joining the Wild Knights in the Japanese League One competition, will however likely be unavailable because the Test falls outside the international window.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
