North Melbourne<\/a> will be without defensive lynchpin Robbie Tarrant<\/a> for the first half of the season after he underwent kidney surgery this week.<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old went under the knife on Tuesday afternoon to remove a small mass on his kidney, with the club saying that the procedure was a successful one.<\/p>\n

Tarrant missed North's Round One loss to Port Adelaide with an adductor strain, and the kidney operation is understood to be completely unrelated.<\/p>\n

"This is something I've been aware of and had elected to address now rather than wait for the end of the season to have it removed," Tarrant said in a club statement.<\/p>\n

\"Robbie<\/p>\n

"I'm truly grateful to my family and the club for their support and love they've shown. I'd also like to thank the medical staff and the specialist for the care and guidance they've provided me.<\/p>\n

"I'm looking forward to getting stuck into my rehab program and can't wait to get back out there with the boys later in the season."<\/p>\n

North Melbourne's GM of football, Brady Rawlings, said the club will allow Tarrant as much time as he needs to recover.<\/p>\n

"We fully support Robbie and his decision to have this procedure. Our focus is solely on his health and well-being," he said.<\/p>\n

"Taz is one of the most professional players I've seen in my time and we know he will be extremely diligent with his recovery from this surgery and also his recent adductor strain.<\/p>\n

"He is an integral part of our club and we can't wait to get him back in the side."<\/p>\n

Tarrant's absence is another addition to a lengthy Kangaroos injury list which already includes Luke McDonald (quad), Trent Dumont (calf), Ben Cunnington (concussion) and Jed Anderson (calf).<\/p>\n
