Australian cricket<\/a> superstar Ash Gardner<\/a> has made history in the second match of the women's ODI World Cup\ufeff after a blistering ton.<\/p>\n

The all-rounder brought up her century off 77 balls with a brilliant drive for a boundary.<\/p>\n

It was the third quickest century in Women's World Cup history and led the Aussies to an 89-run victory over New Zealand to begin their title defence.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffCould not think of a cleaner, more elegant way to bring up your second ODI ton," commentator Mel Jones said on Amazon Prime.<\/p>\n

"Her first in World Cups, her batting keeps rising, her stocks keep rising and she's got Australia out of a massive hole."<\/p>\n

Gardner came in to bat when Australia were 4-113 and it became 5-128 when Beth Mooney was gone. Tahlia McGrath and Sophie Molineux followed to make it 7-239.<\/p>\n

"I had some clear plans when I got into the middle," said Gardner, who was named player of the match.<\/p>\n

"I wanted to score as many runs possible because we needed a big total here. We bat deep so we had the freedom and confidence within our group to play freely.<\/p>\n

"This (scoring big first) is going to be a trend in this World Cup."<\/p>\n

Kim Garth combined with Gardner for a 69-run partnership to help the all-rounder reach her ton.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Brilliant innings, you need your best players to stand up in World Cups," Aaron Finch added when Gardner reached her ton.<\/p>\n

"She's well and truly done that today, brilliant hundred Ash Gardner."<\/p>\n

Gardner was dismissed for 115, making for her second ODI century and highest-ever score in the format. She's the first player to hit a century batting at No.6 or lower in a women's ODI World Cup.<\/p>\n

Australia were dismissed for 326 from 49.3 overs with Garth the last to fall, scoring 38.<\/p>\n

In reply, New Zealand made a rocky start and never recovered in the tall chase \u2014 bowled out for 237 runs in 43.2 overs despite skipper Sophie Devine's 111.<\/p>\n

Medium pacers Sophie Molineux (3-25) and Annabel Sutherland (3-26) shared six wickets between them.<\/p>\n
