Australian teen phenom Gout Gout<\/a> has missed out on a spot in the men's 200-metre final\ufeff at his maiden senior global championships.<\/p>\n

The 17-year-old finished fourth in his semi final at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo with a time of 20.36 seconds.<\/p>\n

In wet conditions at Japan National Stadium, Gout finished behind winner Bryan Levell, reigning Olympic gold medallist \ufeffLetsile Tebogo and American Courtney Lindsey.<\/p>\n

"What a run," Genevieve Gregson said on Nine post-race.<\/p>\n

"It's a hard to act to have Levell and Tebogo up front and see how fast they are, but we are so proud of him, and what he's done has made history."\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gout's performance was quicker than that of Usain Bolt in his semi at his maiden senior world championships in Helsinki in 2005, where he finished fourth with a time of 20.68s.<\/p>\n

Bolt was less than two weeks out from his 19th birthday, while Gout won't even turn 18 until December 29. \ufeff<\/p>\n

The legendary Jamaican sprinter was on deck in Japan to watch Gout and his rivals.<\/p>\n

Almost immediately after the race concluded, Gout went around to all of the other runners and shook their hand in a classy moment.<\/p>\n

"He's a great athlete but he's a great person and I think his coach Di [Sheppard] has really instilled that in him and made sure that he enjoys the journey," Gregson said.<\/p>\n

"If you're not enjoying being out there, there's no point focusing on the end result."\u00a0\ufeff<\/p>\n

After watching the last of the three semi finals which sealed his fate, Gout walked upstairs for an interview with Nine's David Culbert.<\/p>\n

The retired Olympian heaped enormous praise on the Ipswich product and likened his efforts in Tokyo to watching Cathy Freeman make her rise in the sport.<\/p>\n

"You should be very proud of what you did, you ran a great race," Culbert said.<\/p>\n

"If you look back at the heats and the minor mistakes you made, you cleaned them up.<\/p>\n

"I was a teammate of Cathy Freeman's, so I have been on that ride and seen someone transform a sport, and that's what you're now doing."<\/p>\n

Gout was thrilled to be part of the world championships for the first time and it was almost impossible to wipe the smile off his face.<\/p>\n

"It was a great race, being able to come out here in the semi final and do my thing is pretty incredible," the high school student said.<\/p>\n

"I couldn't have asked for anything better. It's been a great experience. To come out here at the young age of 17 is not something many people can experience.<\/p>\n

"Tokyo is one of the cities I've wanted to visit for a long time, so to visit it and compete at a world championships is two of my dreams come true."<\/p>\n

As for having the weight of the nation on his shoulders, Gout knows it's there and is taking it all in his stride.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Sometimes it seeps in, but I think most of the time it washes over me," he said.<\/p>\n

"It's such an incredible thing for Australia \u2026 I can't wait for more."<\/p>\n

Lewis eliminated in women's 200m semis<\/h2>\n

Australia's Torrie Lewis was bundled out in the semi-finals of the women's 200m,\ufeff finishing fourth in 22.69s.<\/p>\n

The national 100m record holder is still to run in the women's 4x100m relay in Japan.<\/p>\n
