NRL<\/a> great Sam Thaiday<\/a> has urged Victor Radley<\/a> to "go away and work on himself" before signing a deal with another rugby league club.<\/p>\n

Radley's career at the Roosters<\/a> appears to be over after the club on Wednesday advised him to explore his options elsewhere.<\/p>\n

It followed the release of explosive text messages between Radley and his former teammate Brandon Smith, who \ufeffwill appear in Southport Magistrates Court on the Gold Coast on Thursday<\/a> to answer charges of unlawfully supplying a dangerous drug and using or disclosing inside knowledge for betting.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Radley has not been charged by police and is not expected to be, but Smith is accused of facilitating a drug deal for him during a Roosters team golf trip earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Radley is contracted until the end of 2027 on a deal said to be worth $700,000 a season, but he almost certainly won't play another game for the Tricolours.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"At the end\ufeff of the day the Roosters have an opportunity to stand on their morals and their standards (after) saying at the start of the year they have zero tolerance for any of their players being involved in incidents like this," Thaiday told Nine's Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I think this has highlighted they both have a problem and probably need to go get some help.<\/p>\n

"I hope Victor goes away, does some work on himself, gets better.<\/p>\n

"I think he would be a fantastic signing and he would have a second life in the NRL at another club, or maybe even in the Super League."<\/p>\n

Radley is 27 years old and can still be one of the competition's premier lock forwards when at his peak, although has been plagued by concussion issues in recent seasons.<\/p>\n

\ufeffHe is a chance to play for England against Australia in the Ashes next month.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Nine and The Sydney Morning Herald journalist Michael Chammas explained why the Roosters wanted to get Radley off their books.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI spoke to (Roosters chairman) Nick (Politis) last night, he is in the United States at the moment on his way back to Australia," Chammas told Today<\/em> on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThe Roosters have to wait until this court case with Brandon Smith on Thursday. The allegations are in relation to Brandon Smith, Victor Radley is not in the sights of Queensland police.<\/p>\n

"But given Nick Politis, his strong stance at the start of the year when he said the club would have a zero tolerance towards drug use, or any player who is standing over any powder… it's going to be a tough conversation the Roosters have to have.<\/p>\n

"There is a possibility \ufeffthat Victor Radley's time at the club could come to an end, based on the information that comes to light from the court case.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIt will be interesting to see how the Roosters handle this."<\/p>\n

Chammas explained the issue with sacking him is Radley has not been charged with a crime, and there is no proof he ingested illegal drugs.<\/p>\n

He says the NRL's integrity unit is also following the case closely.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"They have been informed of all the information but they are going to wait and see how that plays out in court, see how the Roosters handle it, and if they need to come over the top then they will," he said.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffMy understanding is the conversations at the Roosters right now are whether or not to keep Victor Radley at the club beyond this season.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIf they try to terminate his contract there is a potential argument there that he hasn't been charged with anything, this is Brandon Smith who is fronting court and the allegations put forward by Queensland Police aren't going to result in any criminal charges for Victor Radley, so that could be his defence, a wrongful dismissal."<\/p>\n

Smith played alongside Radley at the Roosters until being released mid-season this year to join South Sydney.<\/p>\n

He was pulled aside by police when the Rabbitohs landed on the Gold Coast ahead of their round 23 game against the Titans.<\/p>\n

Police reportedly seized Smith's phone, and on Tuesday text messages between himself and Radley were published by several media outlets.\ufeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
