TOKYO:<\/strong> Pole vaulter Kurtis Marschall secured Australia's first medal of the ongoing world athletics<\/a> championships on Monday night, capturing bronze at the Olympic stadium.<\/p>\n

Gold, inevitably, was\ufeff won by Swedish superstar Armand "Mondo" Duplantis.<\/p>\n

There was never any question that Duplantis would pocket his third world title \u2014 so far ahead of the rest of the field is the 25-year-old, which his competitors openly admit.<\/p>\n

The only question was whether for the 14th time he would set a new world record.<\/p>\n

Three times on this warm and humid Tokyo night, the estimated 50,000 in the crowd held their collective breath as Duplantis tried to launch himself over a bar set at 6.30 metres without, of course, knocking the bar off.<\/p>\n

He sent it tumbling once. A few minutes of meditation followed.<\/p>\n

He sent it tumbling twice. He meditated again.<\/p>\n

Then, with a heaving crowd clapping him down the runway as blasting music rung throughout the stadium, the greatest pole vaulter of all time came up clutch.<\/p>\n

He actually bumped the bar, leaving it wobbling, but the wobbling bar didn't drop.<\/p>\n

Cue euphoria.\ufeff<\/p>\n

He leapt off the mat and into the arms of Greek\ufeff Emmanouil Karalis, the silver medallist.<\/p>\n

Marschall and American \ufeffSam Kendricks, the guy who finished in fourth place, joined in, ecstatic for the Swede sensation.<\/p>\n

Eventually, Duplantis greeted his fianc\u00e9e in the crowd, Swedish model Desir\u00e9 Inglander.<\/p>\n

A passionate kiss followed.<\/p>\n

"There's more to life than gold medals, you know?" said stadium commentator Geoff Wightman.<\/p>\n

\"Armand<\/p>\n

"It's outrageous," Marschall said, talking to reporters about the superstar Swede.<\/p>\n

"We all knew he was gonna do it. Third attempt, we were like, 'Yep, it's guaranteed pretty much. This is like just icing on the cake'.<\/p>\n

"Miracle stuff, fairy-tale stuff, and to be a part of that is so cool.<\/p>\n

"He's already had five perfect seasons before this.<\/p>\n

"It's stupid."<\/p>\n

Duplantis added one centimetre to his world record, just as he'd done on the 13 prior occasions.<\/p>\n

He's now won 37 competitions in a row, stretching back to July 2023.<\/p>\n

\"Armand<\/p>\n

"I am proud of myself for winning the world championships when it mattered most. Setting the world record is a bonus," Duplantis said.<\/p>\n

"I guess there is not a limit for me. Maybe I am the one to find out what the limit in pole vault really is."<\/p>\n

Karalis recorded a top vault of 6.00 metres. He attempted to clear 6.10m, 6.15m and 6.20m, but to no avail.<\/p>\n

Marschall and \ufeffKendricks both topped out at 5.95m. Bronze belonged to Marschall because the American had recorded one unsuccessful attempt at 5.90m.<\/p>\n

"Today was pretty much a dream competition," Duplantis added.<\/p>\n

"I was not alone at a lot of heights. Emmanouil was pushing me a lot. I have never jumped at 6.20m and had another guy with me.<\/p>\n

\"Kurtis<\/p>\n

"That's quite special. I got juices from it.<\/p>\n

"I am very proud of him for performing, not only today but throughout the season. He is pushing me and making me a better jumper."<\/p>\n

Marschall has now won bronze at the past two world championships, although in Budapest in 2023 he had to share with American Christopher Nilsen.<\/p>\n

"It would have been a crazy night had I jumped 6.00m," said Marschall, who equalled his personal best with his 5.95m vault.<\/p>\n

"But 5.95m, bronze medal, first medal for the team this championship, [I] can't complain with that.<\/p>\n

"I'm super happy with how I performed."<\/p>\n

Kendricks and Marschall were both unsuccessful with their first attempts at 5.95m.<\/p>\n

When Kendricks cleared 5.95m with his second go, he went berserk.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Marschall matched him with his second go two minutes later, and the Australian and American embraced.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"\ufeffSo special," Marschall said, reflecting on that moment.<\/p>\n

"It's not like that, I don't think, in any other sport, really, other than team sports.\ufeff<\/p>\n
