Pat Cummins<\/a> is under a cloud of doubt ahead of the Ashes series<\/a> this summer as he awaits the results of scans \ufeffto confirm if he is carrying a stress injury.<\/p>\n

Cummins has been troubled by back soreness since the end of the West Indies tour and was sent for scans on Monday morning to confirm the degree of his injury.<\/p>\n

Further diagnosis of the injury is expected to take some time as Cricket Australia<\/a>'s medical team prepares to work out the next steps for Cummins but the initial management plan involves missing the upcoming T20 tour to New Zealand.<\/p>\n

CA's chief medical officer Dr John Orchard, team doctor Leigh Golding and physio Nick Jones were sent the scans on Monday afternoon. \ufeff<\/p>\n

Cummins was a notable absentee from \ufeffthe T20 travelling squad list on Tuesday to tour New Zealand at the start of October<\/a>, with Cricket Australia revealing he will adhere to "a planned de-load" period as part of a management plan leading into the summer.<\/p>\n

It was also revealed that "a level lumbar bone stress\ufeff has been identified" and will require ongoing management over the next couple of months.<\/p>\n

He has also been ruled out of consideration for the upcoming limited-overs series against India. \ufeffIt is likely he will also be rested by New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield.<\/p>\n

While it is too early to confirm if Cummins will be fit for the Ashes series, The Age reports<\/a> \ufeff\ufeffAustralian selectors are preparing for the possibility that he may not play in every game.<\/p>\n

It is a concerning situation for Australian selectors as Cummins complained of a back issue despite bowling fewer overs against the West Indies in July.<\/p>\n

Across the four Tests on that tour, including the World Test Championship final, Cummins managed just 85.1 overs. In comparison, he delivered 167 overs in a home series against India in January. \ufeff<\/p>\n

In the third Test of the West Indies series, the Australian captain did not bowl in the second innings. Selectors instead opted to take four pace bowlers into the game and omit Nathan Lyon.<\/p>\n

With Cummins rested over the coming weeks, the responsibility of \ufeffMitchell Starc, Scott Boland and Josh Hazlewood will likely increase for the Ashes series.<\/p>\n
