Rugby league guru Phil Gould has taken aim at a controversial Clint Gutherson try-saver in the Parramatta Eels' clash with the Melbourne Storm<\/a>, asking if it should have warranted a penalty try.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred in the 31st minute when Parramatta's Tui Kamikamica muscled his way through two defenders and reached for the try-line as Gutherson led with his legs.<\/p>\n

Gutherson's right leg knocked the ball from Kamikamica's grip, the video referee ruled no try and on-field referee Ashley Klein called knock-on and handed the Eels a scrum feed.<\/p>\n

But Gould said past instances of the same tackle had led to a penalty try.<\/p>\n

\"Clint<\/p>\n

"Gutherson's used his leg. I don't know whether that's legal," Gould said on Nine's coverage.<\/p>\n

"They're a little bit down on players using their legs to get in the way, as Gutherson has done.<\/p>\n

"We had a penalty try in the grand final last year for a very similar occurrence.<\/p>\n

"I think he's put it down short of the line. I don't know whether they'll have a play on Gutherson using his leg to protect the line.<\/p>\n

"I think Gutherson is entitled to do that. I'm not saying he's not allowed to do that. I'm just saying there's been plenty of precedents where they've penalised, even charged, suspended, and we had a penalty try in last year's grand final for a something very similar."<\/p>\n

Last year's grand final between Storm and the Penrith Panthers saw Melbourne centre Justin Olam awarded a penalty try.<\/p>\n

The Bunker awarded Olam a penalty try when it was deemed that Tyrone May had dislodged the ball with an illegal use of his leg.<\/p>\n
