Mitch Owen and Cameron Green<\/a> belted half-centuries as Australia chased down 190 to win the first match of the T20 series<\/a> against the West Indies in the Jamaican capital.<\/p>\n

But the result may have been different had a West Indies substitute fielder taken a simple catch with Australia still needing seven runs to win.<\/p>\n

Australia completed a three-wicket victory in the 19th over to take a 1-0 lead in the five-game T20 series.\ufeff<\/p>\n

In the \ufeffprevious over in the Kingston match, the Australians were reprieved when substitute fielder Jewel Andrew dropped Sean Abbott<\/a> at deep backward square leg.<\/p>\n

The bowler, former West Indies captain Jason Holder<\/a>, buried his head in his hands.<\/p>\n

Australia was 7-\ufeff183 and still in need of seven runs with 13 deliveries remaining when Abbott swatted the ball behind square.<\/p>\n

Jewel fumbled it, Abbott ambled through for a single, and he and Ben Dwarshuis finished off the chase.<\/p>\n

Man of the match was awarded to Owen, who\ufeff smashed 50 from 27 balls in an innings that had shades of his extraordinary 42-ball 108 for the Hobart Hurricanes<\/a> in last summer's Big Bash League final.<\/p>\n

Batting at No.6 on his T20 international debut, Owen smacked six boundaries, all of them sixes, at Sabina Park\ufeff.<\/p>\n

Only two other Australians have scored a half-century on their T20 international debut: Ricky Ponting and David Warner.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Owen was almost run out in extremely unlucky fashion while backing up at the non-striker's end. He was on 42 when Green struck a Gudakesh Motie delivery back down the wicket, and although replays showed he was out of his crease when the bails broke, it was deemed that Motie hadn't got a finger to the ball.<\/p>\n

Green struck 51 from 26 balls, including two fours and five sixes, batting at No.4.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The Australians were in trouble at 4-78\ufeff before Owen and Green came to the rescue, combining for a partnership of 80 runs.<\/p>\n

Earlier in Australia's chase,\ufeff batting enigma Jake Fraser-McGurk failed to take advantage of his \ufefffortuitous return to the T20 side, making just 2 from seven balls and throwing away his wicket with an ugly shot.<\/p>\n

The flashy right-hander wasn't picked in the initial T20 squad for the West Indies\ufeff series, but he earned a late call-up after paceman Spencer Johnson was ruled out with a back injury.<\/p>\n

He was then parachuted into the XI<\/a> for the first match of the \ufefffive-game series after Matt Short went down with a side strain.<\/p>\n

But Fraser-McGurk, who opened with captain Mitch Marsh<\/a> in Kingston, departed for 2 when he flat-batted a Holder delivery down the throat of mid-off in the second over of the chase.<\/p>\n

In the fifth over, Marsh departed when DRS showed the ball had caught his outside edge.<\/p>\n

Umpire \ufeffZahid Bassaranth turned down an appeal from fast bowler Alzarri Joseph and his West Indies teammates, but the hosts reviewed the decision and Marsh was soon trudging back to the pavilion, gone for 24 from 17 balls.<\/p>\n

The West Indies suffered an awful batting collapse in their innings, losing 6-27.<\/p>\n

Their openers, Brandon King and Shai Hope, made\ufeff 18 and 55 respectively. Their first and second drops, Roston Chase and Shimron Hetmyer, made 60 and 38. Otherwise, the hosts' top score was Andre Russell's 8.<\/p>\n

The Windies were 2-159 in the 16th over, and threatening to post a hefty total. Come the end of their innings, they were 8-189.<\/p>\n
