New Aussie cricketer Mitch Owen couldn't have asked for a better start to his career in the green and gold, hitting a six with his first scoring shot against the West Indies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Owen, who dominated the Big Bash last season<\/a> and rose to international standard as a result, showed the same level of aggressiveness that he did in the Australian domestic scene.<\/p>\n

The first delivery he faced was from spinner Gudakesh Motie, with the Tasmanian \ufeffthrowing his hands wildly at the ball but clean missing.<\/p>\n

When Andre Russell came in three balls later, \ufeffOwen was finally off the mark with a six over the bowler's head.<\/p>\n

"That is a tremendous blow, it really is a stunning shot from back of a length," Ian Bishop said on ESPN.<\/p>\n

Brad Haddin added: "What about the theatre \ufeff… maybe a bit of a change of the baton here, the old and the new, Russell comes in and Mitch Owen wants to make a statement. What a way to get off the mark in his international debut."<\/p>\n

Russell \ufeffwill retire from international cricket after the second T2OI.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on his first runs, Owen immediately brought it back to his first shot. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"I\ufeff swung pretty hard on my first ball too which I missed by about two metres," he said.<\/p>\n

"My process has been really simple over the last six to eight months, just trying to be really positive and put the pressure back on the bowler. I was lucky enough I got a few away early and could continue with that."<\/p>\n

Owen went on to score 50, which included six 6's with one heading out of the stadium at Jamaica.<\/p>\n

The Hobart Hurricanes star came in at the unfamiliar position of No.6 with Jake Fraser-McGurk preferred at the top of the order.<\/p>\n

The change didn't faze Owen. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"I honestly tried not to look at the field too much\ufeff and just sort of react to each ball which I think held me in good stead," he said.<\/p>\n

"Obviously it's a little bit different but my process and game plan wasn't too different to opening the batting … we had to strike at (a run rate of) 9s when I came out so I still had to be nice and positive."<\/p>\n

Former Test bowler Chadd Sayers wrote on X, questioning the call though.<\/p>\n

\ufeffDespite the question around the change, Australia came through with victory<\/a>, winning by three wickets after Sean Abbott and Ben Dwarshuis led the side home.<\/p>\n
