\"Anton<\/p>\n

Wearing a costume that resembles a uniform worn by Nazi concentration camps guards and the infamous striped pyjamas of their Jewish victims, complete with a yellow Star of David, might be the worst choice for a figure skating routine. <\/p>\n

But, inexplicably, Russian skater Anton Shulepov still went there during at least two major ISU figure skating competitions last month \u2014 the Grand Prix of Figure Skating in Sapporo, Japan and the Internationaux de France in Grenoble. <\/p>\n

Shulepov\u2019s Holocaust-themed costume combined elements of a Nazi guard\u2019s uniform and the striped, pyjama-like uniform worn by Jews in death camps during the Second World War. He wore it during his free program, skating to the theme from 1993\u2019s Oscar-winning movie, \u2018Schindler\u2019s List.\u2019 <\/p>\n

Compounding the skater\u2019s poor choice was the decision by the International Skating Union to include Shulepov\u2019s outfit in the year-end \u201cbest costume\u201d list that could be voted on by fans. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we understand the need for skaters to be creative in their choice of costumes, Anton Shulepov\u2019s apparent decision to evoke painful Holocaust imagery as part of his routine was insensitive and offensive,\u201d Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, said in a <\/p>\n

statement to the Guardian newspaper<\/a><\/p>\n

. \u201cYellow Stars of David or other concentration camp imagery have no place in figure skating.\u201d <\/p>\n

The ISU removed the costume from its list Monday, saying it mistakenly included it in the voting. A different costume worn by Shulepov was supposed to be included, the ISU said in a statement on Twitter. <\/p>\n

The ISU regrets that by error the wrong costume (Free Skating instead of Short Program costume) of Mr. Shulepov has been presented for voting.<\/p>\n

This error has been corrected and the ISU sincerely apologizes for this mistake and the bad sentiments it has caused.<\/p>\n

Shulepov\u2019s short program was set to different music and featured a different costume \u2014 a dark top that could be opened to reveal a red shirt over black pants. <\/p>\n
