Australian superstar Oscar Piastri<\/a> has extended his lead in Formula 1<\/a>'s drivers' championship with victory in Miami.<\/p>\n

It is his third consecutive grand prix win – the first time in 28 years a McLaren driver has won three grands prix in a row.<\/p>\n

It is also the first time an Aussie driver has won three in a row since Alan Jones in 1980 and 1981.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Piastri started Monday's race in fourth place but leapt to second in the first four laps.<\/p>\n

\ufeffHe then took the lead on lap 14 when he overtook Verstappen.\ufeff<\/p>\n

By lap 18 he held an eight-second lead, and held it to finish ahead of his teammate Lando Norris with Mercedes driver George Russell rounding out the podium and Verstappen in fourth.<\/p>\n

"I won the race that I really wanted to," Piastri said.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffYesterday was a tricky day. The sprint was what it was, but qualifying was probably one of my trickiest sessions of the year, and to come away with a win still on Sunday (Monday AEST) is an impressive result.<\/p>\n

"There was a bit of argey bargey at turn one which helped me out a bit, and then I was \ufeffaware enough to avoid Max coming through at turn one.<\/p>\n

"The car was unbelievable today.<\/p>\n

The win extends Piastri's championship lead to 16 points ahead of teammate Norris.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Norris started second on the grid next to Verstappen, but lost three places on the first couple of laps after running off the track trying to make a move on Verstappen.<\/p>\n

"He forced me off… what am I meant to do, drive into the wall or something?" Norris said on team radio.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, y\ufeffoung Aussie driver Jack Doohan crashed out on the first lap due to a tyre puncture.<\/p>\n

The 22-year-old's race ended almost immediately after it began on Monday morning\ufeff when he collided with Liam Lawson on turn one.<\/p>\n

Lawson managed to get his car back on the track but Doohan was forced off and his race was finished.<\/p>\n
