S\ufeffteve Smith<\/a> has announced he will retire from ODI cricket following Australia's exit from the Champions Trophy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Less than 24 hours after the side bowed out with a semi-final loss against India, it was revealed that Smith told teammates of his decision immediately after the match in Dubai.<\/p>\n

The 35-year-old will still be available for Test and T20 selection moving forward.<\/p>\n

In a statement released on Wednesday evening, Smith thanked his Aussie teammates and reflected on a 50-over career that \ufeffspanned more than 15 years.<\/p>\n

"It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it," Smith said.<\/p>\n

"There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories.<\/p>\n

"Winning two World Cups was a great highlight, along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey.<\/p>\n

"Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 World Cup, so it feels like the right time to make way.<\/p>\n

"Test cricket remains a priority and I am really looking forward to the World Test Championship Final, the West Indies in the winter and then England at home.<\/p>\n

"I feel I still have a lot to contribute on that stage."<\/p>\n

Smith made his ODI debut back in 2010 and has since gone on to play 167 matches in the format, scoring an impressive 5800 runs at an average of 43.<\/p>\n

The right-hander played in both the 2015 and 2023 World Cup triumphs for Australia.<\/p>\n

"We fully understand and support Steve's decision to retire from one-day international cricket," Australian chief selector George Bailey said.<\/p>\n

"Steve has said on many occasions he is approaching the remainder of his playing career on a series-by-series basis, a position which hasn't changed.<\/p>\n

"His record as a batter across 167 games is exemplary, and to leave the format as a two-time World Cup winner cements his legacy as one of the great Australian ODI players."<\/p>\n
