A South African jockey has apologised after vision showed that he tried to whip a rival rider down the final straight in a race at Turffontein on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The National Horseracing Authority of the nation has opened a probe into the actions of\ufeff Gavin Lerena, after he stood up in the irons on favourite Gimme A Storm and struck his colleague Jason Gates, who was riding 66-1 Blurred Vision, multiple times on the back with his crop.<\/p>\n

Lerena appeared to strike Gates several times as the two jostled towards the finish line.<\/p>\n

Ahead of a hearing, which will take place on a date to be fixed, Lerena released a statement, saying his actions were in response to Gates' previous behaviour.<\/p>\n

"I feel it is imperative to offer a formal statement to the racing community," the statement read.<\/p>\n

"What took place is entirely inconsistent with my character, and I deeply regret the incident.<\/p>\n

"I extend my sincerest apologies to the owners and trainer of the horse, my sponsors, the racing fans, and the relevant race day authorities affected.<\/p>\n

"I do want to clarify that my reaction followed encounters and actions from Mr. Gates.<\/p>\n

"In any competitive sport, the instinctual response to a perceived threat, provocation, or aggression can lead to a reaction that, under normal circumstances, we would not exhibit.<\/p>\n

"I acknowledge that my response has raised views and opinions."<\/p>\n

He added:\ufeff "This sport of racing has a special place in my heart; I hold it in the highest regard and remain dedicated to contributing positively to its reputation.<\/p>\n

"I aim to uphold the values that make racing truly exceptional.<\/p>\n

"Regrettably, today's incident detracted from that commitment, and I am deeply remorseful for any disappointment caused to the punters, owners, trainer, fans, and officials."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
