Hawthorn could let legendary coach Alastair Clarkson<\/a> walk with a year left on his contract if he receives a rival offer, according to veteran AFL reporter Jake Niall.<\/p>\n

Clarkson is by far the longest-tenured coach in the AFL, having been at Hawthorn since 2005, and is set to come out of contract at the end of 2022.<\/p>\n

Club president Jeff Kennett has previously stated that Clarkson would not be offered another deal<\/a> beyond his current one, and Niall suggested the four-time premiership winner could be up for grabs, should a rival club come calling.<\/p>\n

"The Alastair Clarkson-Jeff Kennett show will be a big story this year, particularly because Clarkson has two years to run (on his contract)," he told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"Jeff Kennett has already said remarkably that he thinks this will be Clarkson's last contract, so he has this year and 2022.<\/p>\n

\"Sam<\/p>\n

"I believe that if Clarkson gets a job offer from another club and is interested in going to another club, I do not think there is any chance that Hawthorn will stand in his way."<\/p>\n

Former Hawks skipper Sam Mitchell<\/a> is Clarkson's deputy and is widely considered to be a senior coach in waiting. However, Niall says it is no given that Mitchell would be Clarkson's successor.<\/p>\n

"They would let him go and of course they have Sam Mitchell waiting in the wings a natural successor, although I don't think anything in that department is guaranteed," he said.<\/p>\n

"It's not a Buckley-Malthouse situation, he has to prove himself in order to win that position.<\/p>\n

"Clarkson will get job offers and I think that situation will be tested. I wouldn't be certain that he will be at the club in 2022."<\/p>\n
